About The Position

TerraPower is a nuclear technology company focused on developing advanced nuclear reactors and medical isotopes. They are seeking a highly motivated Fuel Handling Engineer to oversee and coordinate equipment supplier Teledyne Brown Engineering on-site in Huntsville, Alabama. This role involves creating and reviewing design solutions for fuel handling equipment, structures, and systems for the Natrium Generation IV Reactor. The position requires extensive experience in system and equipment design and qualification, with experience in operation, maintenance, and fabrication also being valuable. The role reports to a Fuel Handling System Manager and is part of the Natrium Fuel Handling Team, contributing to the design of next-generation advanced nuclear reactors and associated fuel handling equipment.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Nuclear Engineering preferred. Other engineering disciplines may be considered if the candidate has relevant experience.
  • A minimum of ten years of design experience is required
  • Excellent technical writing, documentation, and communication skills.
  • A successful candidate must possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
  • This position is subject to qualification requirements in accordance with ANSI/ANS 3.1. Candidates must meet the minimum education and experience criteria applicable to the role, including relevant nuclear industry experience where required. Verification of data will be part of the hiring process.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. and Doctorate degrees may be credited for up to two and four years of experience respectively.
  • The ideal candidate will possess nuclear industry experience working under an ASME NQA-1 quality program.
  • Experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III or Section VIII a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of supplier design and delivery of nuclear fuel handling systems and equipment from requirements through final design and delivery of equipment to site.
  • Support design, fabrication, construction, and testing of systems and equipment.
  • Coordinate and oversee design and fabrication work by suppliers, including regular on-site support at Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, AL.
  • Develop system and equipment design products such as 3D CAD models, calculations, requirements, system design descriptions, and interface control documents.
  • Identify and ensure effective application of design codes such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, ASHRAE, IEEE, NFPA, BTH-1 and regulatory requirements.
  • Present designs or participate in design reviews.
  • Propose and define testing programs. Provide support and oversight during test execution, evaluation of test results, and reporting of test results.
