About The Position

The Freshman Seminar Teacher's role is to foster an awareness of career and college options in students, aid in their successful transition to high school, and prepare them for future careers and college. This position aims to increase promotion rates for ninth-grade students by creating a supportive environment that facilitates the transition from middle to high school. The teacher will help students master subject content and credentialing skills essential for their educational, social, and career/college readiness. This involves focusing on four key domains: planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; field of study correlated to teaching assignment as a Freshman Seminar teacher.
  • Teacher with any licensure code.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to try new teaching and assessment strategies that would benefit all students.
  • Willingness to participate in on-going staff development.
  • Ability to teach to differences and sensitivity to cultural differences.
  • Commitment to staff development and to apply new techniques in the classroom.
  • Demonstrates the conviction that all children can and will learn in the Little Rock School District.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to quality desegregated education.
  • Ability to articulate student progress clearly to parents.
  • Evidence of the ability to design and implement hands-on activities and thematic units in all content areas.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have the ability to work for the duration of the daily contracted time period, and to be physically present and at assigned work, with only infrequent unexcused absences, during the contract year.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, prepares, and delivers instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
  • Establishes a culture of learning by managing classroom procedures, student behavior, and organizing the physical space.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable for individual student needs.
  • Effectively integrates technology into instructional activities and learning experiences.
  • Reflects on teaching practices, maintains accurate records, and communicates with families.
  • Contributes to the assigned School and the District at large.
  • Grows and develops professionally, demonstrating professionalism and using data to inform instruction.
  • Teaches skills, knowledge, and dispositions through Freshman Seminar courses, aligning with curriculum guides.
  • Administers a yearly aptitude-based talent discovery assessment to identify student talents and align them with career pathways.
  • Plans and organizes Freshman Seminar Program activities, including demonstrations, discussions, Project Based Learning, Field Experiences, and student-led conferences.
  • Provides individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to student needs.
  • Plans and delivers lessons on leadership development, mentorship, social skill building, time management, financial literacy, college financial aid, career/personality assessments, problem-solving, decision-making, interview skills, resume and cover letter writing, and job readiness.
  • Designs learning activities for students to explore their interests, aptitudes, study skills, life skills, employability skills, and career knowledge.
  • Establishes and maintains student behavior standards for a productive classroom environment.
  • Evaluates student growth in college and career knowledge and skills.
  • Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and supplies, and maintains inventory records.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
  • Supervises students in and out of the classroom during the assigned workday.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Maintains professional competence through professional learning activities.
  • Participates cooperatively in the evaluation process with the appropriate administrator.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
