About The Position

At Avalon Holographics, we’re building the world’s most advanced holographic display systems, enabling real-time 3D visualization used in industries such as defense, healthcare, and entertainment, without the use of headsets or glasses! As an FPGA Co-op Student, you’ll help design, test, and optimize the microarchitecture that supports our real-time 3D visualization systems. You’ll gain hands-on experience working with high-speed data processing systems and supporting the development of advanced hardware platforms.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related co-op post-secondary program.
  • Familiarity with VHDL, Verilog, or other hardware description languages (HDL).
  • Strong interest in digital design and hardware development.
  • Naturally curious and motivated to research, explore, and figure things out independently.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of projects and running with ideas from concept through execution.
  • Confident working with direction but without requiring constant step-by-step instruction.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to document technical workflows and communicate findings clearly.
  • Comfortable working across teams including Hardware, Firmware, and Systems Engineering.
  • Collaborative mindset with a willingness to take initiative.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to students in their 4th, 5th or 6th work term.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with FPGA and Engineering teams to support development, testing, and validation of high-performance hardware systems.
  • Design, test, and debug high-speed data processing systems on FPGAs.
  • Support architecture development and contribute to detailed design specifications.
  • Assist in simulation, testing, and validation of FPGA-based systems.
  • Collaborate with Engineering teams to support system integration and functional validation.
  • Debug and troubleshoot hardware and firmware issues.
  • Document designs, workflows, and technical findings.
  • Identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency of hardware systems.
  • Contribute to special projects that support development of advanced visualization hardware.
