About The Position

North Lawrence Community Schools is seeking a student-centered, collaborative educator to serve as a fourth-grade teacher at Shawswick Elementary School. The teacher will provide engaging, rigorous, and standards-aligned instruction while creating a safe, respectful, and supportive classroom environment in which all students can grow academically and socially. The successful candidate will contribute to the NLCS vision of Building Stars by helping students develop strong academic foundations, critical-thinking skills, communication skills, collaboration, confidence, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Indiana teaching license appropriate for the elementary or fourth-grade assignment, or eligibility to obtain the required license before beginning employment.
• Knowledge of elementary curriculum, instructional practices, assessment, classroom management, and child development.
• Ability to create a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom environment.
• Effective written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, colleagues, administrators, and support professionals.
• Ability to meet all district background-check and employment requirements.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience teaching fourth grade or another upper-elementary grade.
• Experience with standards-based instruction, data-informed decision-making, differentiated instruction, intervention, enrichment, and inclusive educational practices.
• Experience collaborating with special education, multilingual learner, high-ability, and student support personnel.
• Experience using instructional technology to support student engagement and learning.
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional growth and collaborative teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver high-quality fourth-grade instruction aligned with Indiana Academic Standards, district curriculum maps, adopted instructional resources, and school improvement goals.
• Communicate clear learning objectives in student-friendly language and help students understand the purpose and real-world relevance of their learning.
• Design logically sequenced lessons with appropriate pacing, rigor, and instructional strategies.
• Use formal and informal assessments, student work, observations, and other data to monitor student understanding and adjust instruction.
• Provide appropriate differentiation, intervention, enrichment, and instructional support to address students’ individual academic, behavioral, social, and language needs.
• Implement accommodations, modifications, Individualized Education Programs, Section 504 Plans, and other student support plans in collaboration with appropriate staff.
• Establish, teach, and consistently reinforce clear classroom routines, procedures, and expectations.
• Use proactive, instructional, equitable, and developmentally appropriate responses to student behavior while preserving student dignity and protecting instructional time.
• Create an inclusive classroom environment in which students feel safe, respected, supported, appropriately challenged, and encouraged to participate.
• Promote active student engagement through discussion, collaboration, inquiry, problem-solving, hands-on learning, questioning, and the appropriate use of instructional technology.
• Encourage students to demonstrate curiosity, responsibility, independence, leadership, and productive learning behaviors.
• Maintain accurate and timely records related to attendance, grades, student progress, assessment results, parent communication, and other required documentation.
• Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and guardians regarding student strengths, progress, needs, classroom expectations, and available supports.
• Collaborate with grade-level colleagues, special education teachers, interventionists, counselors, instructional support staff, administrators, and other professionals to support student success.
• Participate actively in professional learning communities, grade-level meetings, data reviews, intervention planning, curriculum work, school improvement initiatives, faculty meetings, and required professional development.
• Engage in professional self-reflection, establish a professional growth goal connected to student outcomes, and participate fully in the NLCS teacher evaluation and professional growth process.
• Supervise students and help maintain a safe and orderly environment during classroom instruction, transitions, arrival and dismissal, recess, lunch, field trips, and other assigned duties.
• Demonstrate dependable attendance, punctuality, sound professional judgment, confidentiality, and respectful communication with students, families, colleagues, and community members.
• Follow applicable federal and state laws, School Board policies, district procedures, contractual obligations, and administrative directives.
• Perform other duties reasonably related to the position as assigned by the building principal or district administration.
