About The Position

This role involves learning and performing multiple phases of core making and molding within a foundry environment. Responsibilities include operating machinery, preparing materials, filling and ramming sand, setting up molds, finishing cores, applying core wash, and assembling core sections. The position requires teamwork, adherence to safety protocols, and maintaining good housekeeping. The work is largely routine but requires judgment in applying molding practices, sand conditioning, and gating. Employees will learn to read and work from engineering methods, sketches, shop cards, and blueprints.

Requirements

Equivalent to High School education plus four (0-1) years training in molding and/or core making.
Application of various practices requires initiative, solid decision making and ability to follow procedure.
Initiative necessary to work effectively with other members of crew in an efficient and economical manner.
Unusual problems are referred to supervisor.
Mostly light lifting with some occasional moderate to heavy lifting.
Moderately heavy job moving patterns and related equipment.
Works in standing position; at times requires frequent lifting and handling of medium to large castings.
Some heavy lifting, push/pulling on occasion.
Heavy physical effort in hand ramming of sand is also required.
Some work must be performed in an awkward position.
Employees are required to frequently walk or hear.
The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch or crawl.
The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

Ability to learn the multiple phases of core making on both large core bench and small core bench.
Ability to learn how to perform most phases of molding in both floor molding and on the figure 9 molding line.
Ability to learn to read and work from Foundry Engineering methods, sketches, shop cards and blueprints is required.
Follow clearly prescribed standard practice in the operation of the system to ensure top quality molds and cores.
Due to the variety of tasks and varying work matter, skill and judgment are required in the application of molding practice, sand condition, properly cutting gating, ramming, and venting.

Responsibilities

Placing boxes on conveyors using overhead crane, forklift, or by hand.
Preparing boxes for fill.
Determining adequate number of rods and hooks.
Operating sand mixer.
Filling boxes and ramming as required.
Setting and securing change pieces, loose pieces, ramming up cores, and chills.
Finishing cores by pulling vanes or loose pieces and smoothing rough edges.
Applying adequate thickness of core wash and drying jobs.
Pasting and assembling core sections.
Working closely as part of a team in the making of cores.
Performing other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Maintaining good housekeeping practices and habits.
Exhibiting safe execution of all tasks and duties.
Working collaboratively with company supervision to meet company goals.
Performing phases of molding in both floor molding and on the figure 9 molding line.
Preparing jobs for fill.
Placement of riser sleeves, ramming, and striking off excess sand.
Running the roll-a-draw to remove mold from pattern on figure 9 molding line.
Making and varying molds for small, medium, and large sized castings.
Properly locating pattern and flask, setting gaggers, tucking, and shoveling molding sand into flask.
Setting and securing loose pieces, ramming up cores, and chills.
Properly venting, striking off, cutting pouring basin, lifting cope, drawing pattern, rolling any flask set, and moving mold to pouring location.
Patching and repairing mold, cutting gates, and reinforcing joint.
Applying adequate thickness of mold wash and drying jobs.
Setting cores, anchoring cores, determining appropriate medium and thickness of rope seal or glue, closing mold, clamping mold, and weighting mold.
Reading and working from Foundry Engineering methods, sketches, shop cards, and blueprints.
