About The Position

Nolla is building AI doctors to make top-quality healthcare accessible to everyone. Nolla Skin is a leading medical skincare app, and we've expanded to NollaMD for urgent care, with plans for specialty apps. We recently secured $4.5M in seed funding from General Catalyst. This role focuses on AI engineering, specifically integrating LLMs and custom models into production systems where accuracy is critical. You will build evaluation infrastructure, ship backend systems, and work directly with the founding team, impacting patients immediately.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of backend, platform, or product engineering experience.
  • Proven track record of shipping personal projects (side projects, open source, launched apps).
  • Experience working on small teams and building products from scratch.
  • Familiarity with the AI engineering toolkit: prompts, evals, tool calling, RAG, common LLM APIs, with strong opinions on their application.
  • Strong product instincts, capable of scoping and shipping features without direct PM guidance.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and Python.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a regulated industry (healthcare, fintech).
  • Comfort with infrastructure and deployment (Docker, CI/CD).
  • Familiarity with FHIR, HL7, or healthcare data standards.
  • Experience with observability stacks like Langfuse, Sentry, or similar.
  • Prior work in clinical AI, digital health, or other regulated domains.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain backends for existing and new specialty apps, owning systems end-to-end from schema design to production.
  • Develop clinician-facing dashboards and tooling for AI output review.
  • Create internal tools for clinical operations and physicians.
  • Work on prompts, tool calling, and inference optimization for AI features.
  • Build evals and observability for AI systems, defining standards for performance.
  • Implement abstention, routing, and fallback strategies prioritizing safety and correctness.
  • Support a wide range of work including payments, user flows, clinical infrastructure, and model deployment.
  • Architect systems to support rapid product expansion into new verticals, states, and clinical modalities.
