Fortinet Network Engineer (Part Time)

TEKsystemsGarner, NC
$60 - $70Remote

About The Position

We are looking for a part-time network contractor to support their network infrastructure team in Garner, NC. Working directly alongside the full-time Network Engineer, this person will handle day-to-day break-fix tickets, site support, and infrastructure maintenance — freeing the full-time engineer to focus on project-based work and strategic initiatives. This is a hands-on role in a multi-site enterprise environment with a strong focus on Fortinet switching and wireless technologies. The right candidate is self-sufficient, communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and can manage competing priorities within a part-time schedule. They are decommissioning a lot of Cisco equipment so that would be nice to have, however, Fortinet would be the primary area of expertise followed by Palo Alto. Palo Alto is more on the IT Security side so this person will not need to be an expert by any means but experience in it would be a nice to have as well.

Requirements

  • Network Troubleshooting & Break-Fix: The primary function of this role is to absorb the break-fix workload from the full-time network engineer. The candidate must be able to work independently, diagnose issues quickly, and resolve them without hand-holding. Strong analytical skills and the ability to engage directly with site administrators and non-technical users are essential.
  • VLAN & Segmentation: Solid working knowledge of VLAN configuration, network segmentation, and WAN connectivity including site-to-site VPNs is required. This person needs to understand how the network is structured and be able to make configuration changes confidently within established standards.
  • Fortinet: Hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting FortiSwitch, FortiAP, and Fortinet wireless controllers in a multi-site enterprise environment.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in network support or engineering roles
  • Associate degree in IT or related field, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, and wireless networking
  • Ability to follow established network standards and change management processes
  • Strong documentation skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities within a part-time capacity

  • Experience decommissioning Cisco equipment
  • Experience with Palo Alto firewalls

  • Work directly with site administrators to resolve local network issues and support project-related activities
  • Perform routine maintenance including firmware updates, configuration backups, and validation checks
  • Support VLAN configuration and network segmentation aligned to operational and security requirements
  • Assist with WAN connectivity troubleshooting including circuits and site-to-site VPNs
