Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Biology or related field or foreign equivalent degree
  • 12 months related chemistry or pharmacy experience
  • At least 6 months related experience in a scientific and regulated industry such as pharmaceutical or agricultural research.
  • 6 months experience documenting raw data such as Research Octane Number (RON), Motor Octane Number (MON), [R + M)/2], and boiling points of gasoline and ethanol blends.
  • 6 months experience working with business owners and service technicians to provide guidance on how to best remediate fuel quality problems, including calculating dilution factors to remediate cross-contamination in gasoline, kerosine, and diesel products.
  • 6 months experience weighing, measuring and performing dilutions based upon calculations.
  • 6 months experience performing fuel distillation (ASTM test method 86).
  • 6 months experience performing flash point testing (ASTM test method D56).
  • 6 months experience performing ethanol content testing of different grades of gasoline and alcohol flex fuels.
  • 6 months experience working safely with hazardous materials such as benzene, toluene, and naphthalene.
  • 6 months experience reviewing Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and following written SOPs regarding environmental controls and required personal protective equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Document raw data such as Research Octane Number (RON), Motor Octane Number (MON), [R + M)/2], and boiling points of gasoline and ethanol blends subjected to review and audit by the Standards Division of North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
  • Work with business owners and service technicians to provide guidance on how to best remediate fuel quality problems, including calculating dilution factors to remediate cross-contamination in gasoline, kerosine, and diesel products to bring them into compliance.
  • Weigh, measure and perform dilutions based upon calculations.
  • Perform fuel distillation (ASTM test method 86) to determine volatility and check for cross-contamination in retail fuel samples.
  • Perform flash point testing (ASTM test method D56) to check for cross-contamination in kerosine and diesel products.
  • Perform ethanol content testing of different grades of gasoline and alcohol flex fuels to determine the amount of ethanol in both ethanol and non-ethanol blends (internal test method developed from SAE Technical Paper 912421), SOP and Protocol based upon training by the Standards Division of North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer.
  • Work safely with hazardous materials such as benzene, toluene, and naphthalene.
  • Review Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for each product and follow written SOPs regarding environmental controls and required personal protective equipment by the Standards Division of North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer.
