About The Position

Operates a tow motor (forklift) to move bundles of lumber into and out of designated areas. This role involves working from verbal and written instructions, moving lumber to various locations on the lumber yard, and loading/unloading kilns, pre-dryers, steam boxes, stacking racks, tally chains, and trucks. The operator will also load sticks into the stick shuttle and set lumber on cross pieces according to established procedures to prevent damage. The position requires driving large tow motors depending on bundle size and loading requirements, and ensuring the tow motor is maintained in good operating condition. The operator is also responsible for cleaning the work area, observing good housekeeping practices, and adhering to safety precautions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Frequently lifts 25-30 lbs. occasionally lifts boards in excess of 50 lbs. Lifting accomplished anywhere from ground to shoulder level or occasionally above the head.
  • Ability to climb on and off the forklift throughout the day
  • Attention to detail and patience are crucial

Nice To Haves

  • Tow motor (forklift) license is a plus
  • 3 months of previous tow motor (forklift) work experience is desired
  • Previous experience with chain saws, tape measures, hand tools, air and electric powered tools are a plus

Responsibilities

  • Operates tow motor (forklift) to move bundles of lumber into and out of designated areas.
  • Works from verbal and written instructions as provided by supervisor or other authorized person.
  • Moves lumber to all locations on lumber yard; some lumber is strapped securely and remainder of lumber is not strapped.
  • Loads and unloads kilns, pre-dryer, steam box, stacking racks, tally chains, and trucks as required.
  • Loads Sticks into the stick shuttle.
  • Sets lumber on cross pieces and cross pieces on lumber according to established procedures to prevent damage to lumber.
  • Moves from work area to work area as needed to maintain flow of production.
  • Drives large tow motor (forklift) as required depending on bundle size and loading requirements on any specific job.
  • Maintains tow motor (forklift) in good operation condition.
  • Cleans work area as required.
  • Observes good housekeeping practices and prescribed safety precautions.
