About The Position

The Forklift Material Handler / Shipping and Receiving Specialist loads, unloads and moves materials within or near center, cross dock, trailers, yard, or work site by performing the following duties. This role involves receiving items for shipment, inspecting them for identity, quantity, and condition, and opening containers as directed. The specialist will load and unload materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves using hand or forklift equipment, and load materials into carrier vehicles, ensuring they are secured to prevent shifting or damage. Accurate completion of receiving and shipping documents via ProTrans specifications and using a mobile scanner are key responsibilities. The role also includes identifying all shipments by proper marking and labeling, maintaining a clean work environment, conducting daily safety and equipment checks, operating machinery like banding and taping equipment, and adhering to all safety procedures. Continuous improvement initiatives and validation of materials on the dock are also part of the role. Additionally, the position requires learning the functionality of TMS software and performing other clerical duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or 6 months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read and write in English is required.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic computer skills to include using scanning equipment.
  • Must pass the Protrans Forklift Performance Test.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance and talk.
  • Must be able to use both feet and legs when operating a forklift as well as both hands and arms.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Employees must be able to hear in order to perform their essential job functions.
  • Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to hear other forklifts, individuals that may be nearby, and the common noises of the environment around them at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Reads work order or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved.
  • Receives items for shipment, inspects visually for identity, quantity, and condition. Checks for obvious damage and segregates items requiring special handling.
  • Opens containers as directed by work instructions or supervisor.
  • Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks and shelves by hand or with forklift or other handling equipment.
  • Loads materials into carrier vehicles and installs loading tools to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
  • Completes receiving and shipping documents accurately and completely via ProTrans specifications.
  • Completes receiving and shipping activities with use of mobile scanner.
  • Identify all shipments by proper marking and labeling, including special handling instructions.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Conduct safety and equipment checks daily.
  • Operates machinery such as banding, taping, and sealing.
  • Follow all safety procedures. Actively works to improve individual and center safety record.
  • Provides ideas or feedback to identify continual improvement initiatives to enhance the performance of the position, team, and company.
  • Validation and verification of materials on dock to include labeling, pulling packing slips, moving boxes, opening boxes.
  • Ability to learn the functionality of TMS software.
  • Additional clerical duties assigned via use of flex cart.
