About The Position

We are looking for a co-op student to join our Forestry Planning Team for a 12 to 16-month internship. Perspective candidates should be currently in a program related to: Forestry, Environmental Sciences, or Natural Resource Management. The start date will be in September 2026. This is an office-based position located in Edmonton, Alberta. Forestry Planning is part of the Asset Management group, which supports the business by making data-driven decisions, to enable ATCO to deliver optimal value from our electrical assets for our customers.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a co-op (or internship) program at a recognized Canadian university.
  • Enrolled currently in a program related to: Forestry, Environmental Sciences, or Natural Resource Management.
  • Must be both an organized, self-motivated individual who is able to work effectively under minimal supervision and someone who works effectively within a team environment on complex technical projects
  • Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have a willingness to learn new processes and skills
  • Familiar with data management principles

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with spatial data and ArcGIS (ESRI or FME)
  • Knowledge of Remote Sensing data (especially LiDAR) and provincial landscape datasets
  • Coding ability (especially in Python or R) and knowledge of Machine Learning processes
  • An understanding of tree growth and yield science
  • Experience within the Electric Utilities Industry

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing data submitted by contractors through our Clearion Software to make sure it is accurate by use of a python script. Once the data is verified it is then passed on to our Forest Operations group for execution
  • Support wildfire status mapping and forecasting
  • In consultation with ATCO team lead make improvements to data management structures
  • Mine historical datasets for incident root cause and vegetation management trending analysis
  • Analyzing work and asset data to determine strategy (ex: increase/decrease maintenance frequency, repair vs. replace equipment, etc.)
  • Working with ATCO Senior Planner(s) to identify subject matter experts from across the business to facilitate decisions relating to work and assets.
  • Gathering input from all levels of the business to help characterize cost, risk, benefit, etc.
