About The Position

The Manulife Forest Management (MFM) Lake States & Northeast Division manages timberland investments across approximately 561,000 acres in Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, New York, and Pennsylvania. This role will be responsible for managing timberland assets in New Hampshire, focusing on northern hardwood forest management, with secondary management in spruce, fir, and mixed cover types. The management regimes include both even-aged and uneven-aged silviculture. The position will collaborate closely with the Area Manager, supporting the same client portfolio of natural asset investments.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry or equivalent experience as required
  • Minimum 1 year career experience with organizational and team supervision experience desirable
  • Proficient in Northern Hardwood, Spruce, Fir and mixed cover type forest management. This includes knowledge and experience with management cost and return expectations, discounted cash flow analysis, harvest administration, and timber marketing.
  • Proficient in leadership principles and a team-oriented work environment.
  • Knowledgeable in concepts related to forest stewardship.
  • Knowledgeable in safety concepts for timberland operations.
  • Knowledgeable in areas of employee relations, client relations, community relations, industry relations, communications, and employee safety.
  • Proficient with timberland accounting, inventory/GIS systems and general forestry operations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a strong service-oriented relationship with appropriate MIMT and MIMFM personnel and maintain client fiduciary obligations.
  • Follow stewardship policies and practices to meet or exceed state BMP for Water Quality, Soils, and Invasive Species compliance and third party SFI/FSC certification standards.
  • Provide oversight and implementation of safety procedures for all area personnel, contractors, and property assets.
  • Assist in providing management direction and oversight for area operations to include planning, budgeting, GIS updates and quarterly property reports.
  • Administer harvesting operations which includes harvest planning, field inspection, timber cruising, timber merchandising, forest operations scheduling, timber sale bid analysis, timberland harvesting contracting, timberland security procedures and inspections.
  • Assist in marketing all wood products, exploring new market opportunities, maintaining market communications.
  • Assist in oversight, planning and implementing road building and road maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws; conservation easement compliance.
  • Assist in creating an Annual Operating Plan, and year end reporting for stakeholders.
  • Routinely attend Conservation Easement stakeholder meetings
  • Assist in oversight, maintenance and implementation of recreational trail use agreements.
  • Assist in managing harvest volumes and silvicultural prescriptions while maintaining Conservation Easement and carbon project compliance.
  • Support the resolution of trespass, encroachment, illegal activities, and environmental issues by coordinating with the appropriate authorities and channels.
  • Utilize and oversee consultants on field tasks as appropriate.
  • Where possible, seek non-timber income opportunities from MIMT properties; assist in overseeing cabin license program and licensee compliance.
  • Assist in managing wood flow and fulfillment of wood delivery agreements.
  • Provide feedback to Area Manager in reporting of operational status, markets, stewardship, risks including Weekly Reporting, Fire Weekly Reporting, Monthly Flash Reports, Quarterly Property Highlights, Quarterly Safety Tracking, Annual Budget Reports, Casualty Loss Reporting.
  • As requested, assist in planning and leading property tours for clients, stakeholders, MFM peers.
