About The Position

The Georgia Forestry Commission is seeking a Management Forester (NRP020) to provide technical assistance to landowners in all areas of forest management. This role involves writing forest management plans, assisting with timber sales, providing guidance on afforestation and reforestation, diagnosing insect and disease infestations, assessing storm damage, developing prescribed burning plans, and assisting with establishing Streamside Management Zones. The position also includes presenting forestry programs, assisting landowners with cost-share programs, preparing reports, and potentially operating heavy equipment and assisting with fire control. This position requires passing a moderate work capacity test or physical agility test annually.

Requirements

  • Completion of bachelor’s degree in forestry, forest resources, or closely related major, which includes core forestry coursework from a SAF accredited school; or completion of an associate degree in forestry, which includes forestry coursework from an SAF accredited school, and be a Georgia Registered Forester.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and GIS.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Completes agency-specific training and requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance to landowners in all areas of forest management.

  • Assess storm damage to forest lands.

  • Provide assistance with establishing Streamside Management Zones.
  • Present forestry programs to school groups and local government bodies.
  • Assist landowners with cost-share programs.
  • Prepare reports, including measuring and computing acreage.
  • Assist landowners in control burns.
  • May operate heavy equipment.
  • Assist with fire control as needed.
