About The Position

The Foreperson is responsible for the direct supervision of assigned industrial production lines. This role requires knowledge of blown film basics, troubleshooting, extruder drives, heaters, and controls. The Foreperson must understand how to start up and shut down production lines and is responsible for ensuring packer compliance with established safety, quality, quantity, housekeeping, and disciplinary standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, equivalent, or two years of previous blown film-manufacturing experience.
  • Good mechanical background a plus.
  • Have valid Amcor forklift license.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in English.
  • Ability to do functional math; i.e., adding, subtracting, multiplying, and division.
  • Ability to use a handheld calculator to figure percentage formulas and output yield.
  • Must be able to calculate the density of the blend and percentage of layer thickness with micrometers.
  • Accurately read provided measuring devices.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Must be able to keep up with moderate speed production machines: winders, bag machines, printing presses, extruders, blenders, and pumps.
  • Manual dexterity required with exposure to arm, wrist, and back fatigue.
  • Frequently uses arms, hands, and fingers to handle, grasp, hold, grip, and squeeze.
  • Routinely bends and occasionally lifts up to 65 pounds over a twelve (12) hour shift.
  • Kneels, squats, pulls, and drags sheets of plastic.
  • Rearranges and organizes products/materials.
  • Climbs/descends stairs into/from the tower areas 50 to 75 feet in the air.
  • Pushes a broom to clean the production floor.
  • Stands approximately 10 hours and frequently walks the production area to locate materials, check supplies, locate pallets, and offer assistance where needed.
  • Routinely steps up 1½ feet and pulls themselves into the seat of a forklift.
  • Operation of forklift and lifting equipment are essential to job responsibilities.
  • Constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • Work in a teamwork environment.

Responsibilities

  • Review production orders in a start-up production, run and shut down of equipment.
  • Responsible for all processes, equipment, and packers on assigned lines.
  • Meet production, quality, and quantity standards.
  • Assure proper set ups and quality checks are being performed.
  • Organize work for smooth operations.
  • Assist in training packers on how to do quality checks, gauge, length, width, and weight, and follow up on production to ensure product is being produced to specifications and document paperwork.
  • Train machine operators on how to make boxes and label them, lace the line, and thread up the post gussets and bag machines.
  • Make necessary adjustments and set up equipment so product is in compliance with the work order.
  • Operate all aspects involved in a start-up, process control blending system, recalibration and control panel, printing press, and bag separator, and can take a line down properly.
  • Troubleshoot the majority of problems on extrusion, bag machines, and winders.
  • Advise machine operators of order changes to ensure proper materials are ready for the new order.
  • Teach machine operators the entire process of blown film production from the beginning to the finished goods.
  • Know the resin system and the various resins used for their application and in what capacity.
  • Keep the hoppers full of resin and gay lords of resin ready for use.
  • Notify Supervisor of equipment problems and advise of quality problems.
  • Run the lines efficiently so scrap is at a minimum. No scrap is to be left behind for the oncoming shift.
  • Assist other packers and Line Foreman when their lines go down or there is a manufacturing problem.
  • Move equipment in and out of the manufacturing area for production changeovers with a pallet jack or forklift.
  • Replace broken or worn-out hand equipment and ensure packers have all their PPE available and in use.
  • Assist Utility person move and wrap pallets.
  • Adhere to and execute applicable Environmental Health & Safety programs to provide a safe and clean workplace for all employees according to Berry, local, state, and federal requirements/regulations.
  • Maintain housekeeping on production lines.
