About The Position

To serve as a civilian employee of the Indiana State Police whose primary responsibility is to support the Forensic Services Division’s (FSD) responsibilities in providing biological testing services. These positions are grant funded. Continued employment is completely dependent upon the renewal (or “life”) of the grant.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Successful completion of 60 college credit hours from an accredited institution.
  • Ability to effectively operate various computer systems and software.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to safely handle various types of chemicals and biohazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift and move supplies that may include climbing a ladder.
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve forensic information using a computer.
  • Ability to learn the operations of complex laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to established laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to differentiate colors as evidenced by medical certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel by aircraft and other vehicles.
  • Ability to attend training at alternate locations for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • Natural science classes and/or previous work in a laboratory environment is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Process biological samples and associated information.
  • Maintain and calibrate various laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Maintain adequate biology supply and reagent inventories.
  • Provide administrative and quality assurance support to Biology Section and Unit Supervisors.
  • Maintain effective communication with the scientific and criminal justice communities, and Department personnel.
  • Conduct confidential data entry of identifying information from non-evidentiary biological samples.
  • Work under the direction of a forensic supervisor including review of records.
  • Maintain and conduct routine performance checks on laboratory instruments.
  • Coordinate repairs of laboratory instruments.
  • Keeping inventory of reagents and consumables to allow sufficient lead time for ordering.
  • Properly receive, label, and prepare chemical reagents for use in biological analysis.
  • Assist in the receipt and accessioning of non-evidentiary biological samples.
  • Prepare biological samples for genetic analysis.
  • Create and maintain various spreadsheets and databases and other software to track reagents and non-evidentiary biological samples.
  • Search the DNA database for duplicate collections of non-evidentiary biological samples.
  • Assist with expungement of non-evidentiary biological samples.
  • Perform quality control testing on critical reagents for use in DNA analysis.
  • Assist with generation and maintenance of quality assurance documentation.
  • Comply with Standard Operating Procedures, Rules, Regulations, and FSD policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.
