As a Forensic Scientist Trainee with the Bureau of Forensic Services, Harrisburg Regional Laboratory, you will take part in work that supports justice across the Commonwealth. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or a closely related physical or natural science, which includes or is supplemented by 16 college credits in chemistry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative testing on trace evidence and drug samples using approved scientific methods
  • Gain hands-on experience in physical, chemical, and instrumental examination techniques during structured training
  • Maintain complete and precise records of all testing procedures and results in case files
  • Follow proper techniques for collecting, preserving, and receiving evidence to support courtroom readiness
  • Follow all safety, quality assurance, and procedural standards outlined by the Pennsylvania State Police
  • Provide expert testimony on analytical methods, chain of custody, and examination results when required
