About The Position

Mercy Health is seeking a Forensic Registered Nurse (RN) for a PRN position at St. Vincent Medical Center. This role involves specialized education and training to provide professional nursing care to patients affected by crime, unlawful acts, trauma, and harm. The Forensic Nurse integrates knowledge from nursing science, criminal justice, public health, and forensic science, using a trauma-informed approach to assess medical-legal needs, coordinate care with a multidisciplinary team, and ensure quality patient outcomes. The position requires collaboration with various professionals including medical staff, advocates, social workers, law enforcement, and legal practitioners. The nurse will also be responsible for patient education on violence prevention and detection, and maintaining departmental quality assurance through peer reviews and case reviews, ensuring adherence to ANA and IAFN standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Nursing (required)
  • Current RN license in the state of practice or covered by compact (required)
  • Valid State Driver’s License (required)
  • 2 years of RN experience (required)
  • Assigns patient care according to the nursing skill, knowledge, and scope of practice of staff.
  • Performs comprehensive assessment of patient's clinical condition and psychosocial needs of the patient and their supportive resources.
  • Safely and efficiently develops, implements, and prioritizes plan of care.
  • Application of the nursing process in patient care delivery.
  • Assesses patient's physical and emotional responses to treatment to evaluate effectiveness of intervention and patient outcomes; revises plan of care accordingly.
  • Assists patient and family in coping with patient's illness.
  • Collaborates with others in the delivery of coordinated patient care.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments, analyze data, create a plan of care, implement treatment, and evaluate effectiveness and safety planning.
  • Administer medications safely and in accordance with state regulations and hospital policies.
  • Serve as the point of contact for patient care coordination across hospital departments.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including medical professionals, community advocates, social services, faith leaders, law enforcement, and legal practitioners.
  • Participate in monthly peer and case reviews to maintain departmental quality assurance and ensure forensic documentation aligns with ANA and IAFN standards.
  • Apply the nursing process to assess, diagnose, and treat individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations affected by violence and trauma.
  • Integrate forensic and nursing sciences in the assessment and care of populations affected by physical, psychological, or social violence, trauma, or death, including various forms of abuse and neglect.
  • Provide episodic care for populations affected by trauma, including victims, suspects, the accused, and perpetrators.
  • Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assess the need for and implement unit-based activities such as quality assessment and in-services.
  • Provide education to patients, staff, communities, and populations on the prevention, detection, and treatment of violence effects.
  • Accept responsibility and accountability for ethical and legal functioning.
  • Travel to and provide services at multiple hospital facilities within the system's service area as scheduled or required.
  • Practice and deliver care in accordance with the core concepts and intention of the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.
