About The Position

Sentara Careplex Hospital is hiring a Registered Nurse, Forensic Nurse Examiner for the Emergency Department. This role involves providing high quality and cost-effective care to forensic patients, maintaining positive group dynamics, and promoting professional growth within the Forensic Nursing program. The Forensic Nurse Examiner will maintain knowledge of the judicial process, laws, and legal statutes pertaining to forensic nursing, as well as the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund for billing procedures. Responsibilities include creating and maintaining forensic medical records, assessing forensic patients outside the hospital setting, and complying with court subpoenas. The Emergency Department at Sentara CarePlex Hospital is equipped with 43 beds, including 11 fast-track beds, and is staffed by board-certified emergency physicians and specially trained nurses.

Requirements

  • Virginia or Compact Multi-State License in good standing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of hire
  • RN-Bachelor’s Degree, or RN-Master’s Degree
  • Minimum of 1 year clinical experience
  • Must have satisfactorily completed a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) or Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) training program

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized training in emergency care
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Pediatric certification

Responsibilities

  • Ensure high quality and cost effective care to all forensic patients.

  • Promote professional growth and development of the Forensic Nursing program on a continuous basis.
  • Maintain knowledge of judicial process, laws, and legal statutes as it pertains to forensic nursing.
  • Maintain knowledge of Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund as it pertains to forensic patient billing procedures.
  • Create and maintain forensic medical records.
  • Assess forensic patients outside of the hospital setting.
  • Comply with all court subpoenas.
