About The Position

The Forensic Mental Health Practitioner primary role is to assist the person served is working on recovery goals while navigating their competency restoration requirements. Primary duties would be to educate and coordinate with the person served to ensure they are meeting the requirements for their competency restoration, connecting with the person served if they are struggling to remain in the program and assisting them with creating a treatment plan that meet their goals. Forensic Mental Health Practitioners also connect with the person served in community settings (such as attending court) to assist with returning to treatment or completing tasks needed for competency restoration. Secondary Roles would be to coordinate with the person served mental health practitioner or be the primary mental health practitioner to ensure that treatment goals and documentation are encompassing their goals and the requirements of competency restoration. Forensic Mental Health Practitioners help guide, support and advocate for their person served as they undergo competency evaluations, competency restoration treatment and transition into the community.

Requirements

  • Demonstration of the ability to conduct functional assessments, develop treatment plans, provide crisis and behavioral management, provide goal directed individual counseling, facilitate groups, teach skills, provide case management, problem-solve, and communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a team and ability to work alone.
  • First Aide/CPR certification.
  • HIPAA training.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
  • Medication Monitoring/Administration training.
  • Principles and Techniques of Psychiatric Rehabilitation training (including Over-All Rehabilitation Goal Setting, Functional Assessment, Skills Teaching and Programming).
  • Empathy/Motivational Training.
  • Training on Working with Persons Experiencing Mania, Hallucinations, and Delusions.
  • Relapse Prevention Planning training.
  • Well-maintained car with current car insurance.
  • Safe driving record.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Clear criminal background study check (Rule 11).
  • Clear sexual conduct questionnaire (MN Statute 148A).

Nice To Haves

  • A general understanding of the Competency Restoration Process.
  • A strong understanding of Civil Commitment Process.
  • A general understanding of working with forensic based systems and support individuals in those systems.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and maintain accurate records or reports regarding the patients' histories and progress, services provided, or other required information.
  • Counsel clients individually or in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, or making changes.
  • Interview clients, review records, and confer with other professionals to evaluate individuals' mental and physical condition and to determine their suitability for participation in a specific program.
  • Variety of Assessments.
  • Assist with developing client treatment plans based on research, clinical experience, and client histories.
  • Review and evaluate clients' progress in relation to measurable goals described in treatment and care plans.
  • Intervene as an advocate for clients or patients to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.
  • Coordinate counseling efforts with mental health professionals or other health professionals, such as doctors, nurses, or social workers.
  • Modify treatment plans to comply with changes in client status.
  • Participate in case conferences or staff meetings.
  • Provide clients or family members with information about addiction issues and about available services or programs, making appropriate referrals when necessary.
  • Plan or implement follow-up or aftercare programs for clients to be discharged from treatment programs.
  • Coordinate activities with courts, probation officers, community services, or other post-treatment agencies.
  • Entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic form.
  • Providing personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to others such as coworkers, customers, or patients.
