Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or a closely related physical or natural science, which includes or is supplemented by 16 college credits in chemistry and three credits each in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and population genetics or statistics.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
  • Submit a report of medications for screening by the State Police Medical Officer prior to placement.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to use thermal cyclers, genetic analyzers, automation platforms, Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), and other tools used in forensic DNA work
  • Train in identifying human DNA profiles and applying chemical and biological techniques
  • Receive instruction in isolating, extracting, and amplifying DNA from forensic casework
  • Practice comparing known and unknown DNA profiles and interpreting results as matches, non-matches, or inconclusive
  • Gain experience in collecting, preserving, and documenting forensic evidence while maintaining proper chain of custody
  • Prepare detailed notes and reports that follow laboratory policies and legal requirements
  • Assist with performance reviews and maintenance of laboratory instruments and supplies
