About The Position

Berks Counseling Center is a recovery-oriented behavioral health, physical health, and supportive services organization providing a holistic approach to a culturally and economically diverse population for the purpose of achieving a healthy and productive lifestyle. As a Forensic Counselor, you will provide screenings, assessments, and out-patient services to inmates housed at the Berks County Jail System.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related social service field
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week within agency hours of operation, which are 8am-8pm Mon-Thurs, 8am-4pm Friday with Saturday hours, when applicable.
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents and read and analyze data on a computer screen for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to hear well to communicate with clients, vendors, and coworkers in a forensic setting.
  • Must have mobility to move about the prison with little to no assistance; some assistance devices are not permitted inside the secure area of the prison.
  • Must be able to carry up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to write, type and use technology.
  • Must have and be able to maintain access to work in the BJCS setting.
  • Receipt of results of a satisfactory drug and alcohol screening test.
  • Receipt of the originals of the following background checks: PA State Police Criminal History, PA State Child Abuse, and DPW FBI Criminal History. These clearances must be valid within the 60 months prior to employment.
  • Receipt of original documentation and verification of relevant degrees, diplomas, certificates, or licensure.
  • Confirmation that you are not on the OIG Federal Healthcare Program Exclusion from Participation list.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year direct substance abuse counseling experience (or relevant internship)
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • CAC preferred
  • Be Bilingual: English/Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provided screening and assessment of inmates.
  • Provide individual, group, and family counseling as appropriate to inmates.
  • Effectively complete all required clinical documentation related to outpatient treatment standards in an efficient and up-to-date manner.
  • Work collaboratively with BCC and BCJS staff, this includes working with the care coordinator of the Jail Project.
