Berks Counseling Center is a recovery-oriented behavioral health, physical health, and supportive services organization providing a holistic approach to a culturally and economically diverse population for the purpose of achieving a healthy and productive lifestyle. As a Forensic Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, you will be an active member of the integrated care team. You will use your own unique experiences to mentor, teach, and support incarcerated individuals with building skills and resources to facilitate individual recovery, while at Berks County Jail System and as they are transitioning back into the community.

Requirements

  • A PCB Certified Recovery Specialist
  • CRS: Self-identified current or past consumer of substance abuse treatment services with at least two (2) years recovery.
  • If you have a dual substance use disorder, you will need to be at least 2 years in recovery.
  • A valid PA Driver’s License and the ability to drive, travel, and provide community-oriented service.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week within agency hours of operation, which are 8am-8pm Mon-Thurs, 8am-4pm Friday with Saturday hours, when applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Have a PCB Certified Peer Specialist certification.
  • If CPS: To attest mental health diagnosis and stage of recovery.
  • Be Bilingual: English/Spanish preferred.
  • Have knowledge of drug and alcohol support programs including 12 step programs, drug and alcohol disorders and treatment, principles used towards achieving recovery, and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).
  • Have knowledge of or experience with trauma-informed approaches preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist incarcerated individuals in identifying appropriate treatment plan goals and action steps, during their incarceration and when they transition back into the community.
  • Effectively assess consumers’ skills, strengths, and needs that will support ongoing substance abuse recovery.
  • Develop and/or have input into the professional development of a treatment plan that will promote recovery.
  • Assist consumers in identifying Personal Medicine, writing Power Statements, and completion of the Common Ground Health Report.
  • Assist consumers in overcoming barriers to care.
  • Help identify resources and educate consumers about community social service supports that might be available.
  • Facilitate peer-oriented skill development and education groups that promote consumer progress in jail and community.
