About The Position

Under general supervision for the Streets and Traffic Manager, the Sewer Foreman supervises, leads, trains and performs skilled and specialized labor including complex physical and mechanical tasks. The Sewer Foreman is responsible for providing leadership to crews in operation of heavy equipment, maintenance of sanitary and storm sewer systems, reading sewer maps, and related equipment and facilities deemed necessary by the supervisor for the successful operation of the department. It is imperative job duties are performed with respect, integrity, objectivity and in the best interest of the City. All City employees are expected to be honest and truthful at all times.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant field experience and/or advanced training through school, apprentice or other specialized programs.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements “ABCD” in good standing or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire required (valid driver’s license at the time of hire required).
  • Failure to obtain or maintain will result in termination of employment.
  • Completion of Arbinger Institute Training within one year of hire required.
  • Completion of supervisory training courses through CVMIC within one year of hire required.
  • Working knowledge of common practices with respect to the maintenance of sanitary and storm water systems
  • Abilty to read sewer maps and other digital/GIS based maps.
  • Thorough knowledge of the proper uses and techniques for using materials, equipment, and power and hand tools for maintenance, repair, construction and other departmental activities.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safe work practices involved in the operations of the Department of Public Works.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form with a variety of city personnel and members of the public, and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, contractors and participants.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematical principles.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills and a strong sense of responsibility and initiative.
  • Ability to work closely with the Supervisor and coworkers in performing a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the maintenance of sanitary and storm sewer systems and root and grease treatment methods.
  • Supervises and performs specialized maintenance duties in the construction, repair, and maintenance of sanitary and storm sewers, equipment, and various activities of the Public Works Department.
  • Operates a variety of tools and equipment including a sewer jet, vacuum truck, various water and sewer pumps, and sewer inspection camera equipment.
  • Reads and utilizes sewer maps.
  • Effectively trains, monitors, and when necessary corrects the performance of assigned employees.
  • Enforces City, Public Works, and Safety policies.
  • Respectfully confronts and corrects employees not in compliance.
  • Operates or is able to operate all Department of Public Works equipment including but not limited to: backhoes, tractors, snow plows, and all CDL required vehicles.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of underground utilities, digger’s hotline markings, trench and confined space safety regulations.
  • Operates confined space gas meters and confined space entry equipment.
  • Safely loads trucks without damage and remains fully aware of surrounding hazards including above utility lines and trees.
  • Keeps accurate records, makes reports, and performs additional tasks as required by supervision.
  • Supervises, prepares, plans, and if necessary performs safe and effective operation of plow trucks and wings and related snow and ice removal equipment.
  • Hauls sand, gravel, dirt, snow, salt, garbage, yard waste, materials and equipment.
  • Responds to weather related emergencies outside of regular work hours as needed
