About The Position

General Dynamics NASSCO, a member of the General Dynamics Marine Systems business unit, is seeking a Pipe Shop Foreman for the day shift in Norfolk, Virginia. The company specializes in ship construction, repair, conversion, and maintenance for commercial and national defense assets. This role involves leading, guiding, coordinating, and supervising a team of mechanics, trainees, helpers, and subcontractors. The hours for this position are 0600-0245pm. Candidates must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards by obtaining DBIDS and NAVSEA badges. No security clearance is required.

Requirements

  • BA/BS plus 2 years in a related field or AA/AS plus 4 years directly related experience or 8 years directly related ship building/ship repair experience.
  • In-depth knowledge in all facets of the trade relating to ship repair.
  • Working knowledge of contracting and estimating procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and utilization of production processes, methods, quality, and technology.
  • Effective leadership, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Proven ability in people environment.
  • Capable in Microsoft products.
  • Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards by obtaining DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and qualify for a CAC or RapidGate badge.
  • Must have reliable record of attendance and punctuality.
  • Must be able to physically transit all areas of the facility and the drydock.
  • Must be able to go on vessels.
  • Must be familiar with working in a naval-ship-work-environment and be able to go aboard marine vessels and the drydock, climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces, and wear personal protective equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, guide, coordinate, and supervise a team comprising Journeyman Level Mechanics, Trainees, Helpers, and Subcontracted Labor.
  • Serve as an on-site deck-plate leader for the trade, working with a team of typically 8-30 mechanics to accomplish assigned production activities.
  • Be responsible for safety, quality, schedule, and cost for their team.
  • Plan and project manpower requirements to support Production / Program Management activities and communicate resource requirements to the General Foreman.
  • Review Gantt chart schedules to plan work two weeks out, develop 1-2 week schedules for team members, and communicate progress to the General Foreman.
  • Develop daily work assignments and expectations for the production workforce.
  • Review and document employee performance.
  • Understand and uphold the requirements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Walk every production job before assigning it to assess necessary preparations for efficient and safe execution.
  • Follow up at job sites multiple times a day to ensure proper progress and resolve potential issues.
  • Assign mechanics to jobs to most effectively utilize their skill set and maximize performance.
  • Ensure all employees are properly supervised and have the necessary tooling, equipment, specifications, drawings, and procedures.
  • Deconflict work and inform the General Foreman of any potential problems that jeopardize completion of quality work within budget and schedule.
  • Inspect every job by every mechanic upon completion to ensure trade quality standards and attention to detail have been met.
  • Attend daily production meetings and coordinate assignments with other shops, ensuring projected goals are met and all issues are addressed.
  • Monitor trade / shop rework trends and implement corrective action.
  • Participate in the development of standard / best practice and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage workforce performance and compliance to company rules; implement corrective action, conflict management, and disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Monitor workforce performance and absenteeism.
