About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a FOREMAN - Journeyman Carpenter for their Maintenance Shop. This role involves performing the full range of journeyman-level carpentry duties in the construction, finishing, and repair of buildings, furniture, and other wood or metal products to support the district's education mission. The foreman will also provide direction and guidance to others within the carpentry department to ensure efficient operations. The position requires assisting the Director of Physical Properties with project specifications, providing professional input, gathering cost estimates, preparing quote sheets, coordinating with other crafts and vendors, planning daily work, ensuring work order completion, and providing first-level leadership and performance evaluations for carpentry staff. The role also involves handling personnel issues, ensuring district goals and policies are met safely and timely, performing rough and finished carpentry, estimating supplies, reading blueprints, repairing various building components, installing hardware and flooring, making minor roof repairs, constructing minor buildings, assisting other departments, operating and maintaining carpentry tools and equipment, and keeping accurate records of time and materials. The position may involve minor supervisory roles and requires the ability to work with materials that may disturb asbestos and wear a respirator. Other duties as directed are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • High school graduation, AND completion of trade (apprenticeship) and/or vocational school program including courses in mathematics, carpentry and woodworking
  • Minimum of Five (5) years work experience in the building trades as a journeyman level Carpenter or equivalent work experience in a commercial, educational or facilities operations setting, with two (2) years in a leadership role
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade, in addition to construction and building repair terminology, and applicable local, state and federal health and safety code requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and materials
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with others
  • Must be a self-starter and self-motivated to complete assigned job tasks
  • Spatial ability is needed to understand forms and relationships
  • Knowledgeable in construction and building repair terminology
  • Numerical ability required to make proper calculations
  • Able to read and understand blueprints, specifications and diagrams
  • Able to construct cabinetry and other similar works from simple diagrams and/or blueprints/shop drawings
  • Knowledge of trade related machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, maintenance and safe operating practices
  • Strong organizational ability
  • Knowledge of, and the ability and desire to support, relevant policies, procedures and strategies to promote effective educational operations for the protection of students, staff, co-workers and District property
  • Employee shall have a valid driver’s license at the time of his/her employment with the Kansas City Kansas USD #500 School District
  • Must be medically and physically able to wear a respirator

Nice To Haves

  • Cabinet making experience highly preferred
  • Knowledge of public schools or university operations preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director with project specifications
  • Assist the Director by providing professional input and guidance
  • Gather cost estimates for repairs or equipment replacement for action by the Director
  • Prepare quote sheets for approval
  • Coordinate with other crafts and outside vendors when necessary, or at the request of the Director
  • Plan and coordinate the daily work within this specific trade or craft to complete work order requests in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all completed work order information is entered appropriately
  • Provide the first level of leadership guidance of others within this specific trade or craft
  • Complete the first level of performance evaluation for others within this specific trade or craft, for approval by the Director
  • Inform the Director of potential personnel issues and/or violations of adopted Personnel Policies, and participating in appropriate corrective action
  • Performs rough and finished carpentry work in the repair and construction of buildings, sheds, roofs, room partitions and other items
  • Estimates, determines needs, and arranges for supplies and equipment in order to perform or schedule work assignments
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and/or specifications to determine procedure(s) for required construction and/or remodel projects
  • Repairs partitions, doors, locks, windows, blinds, floors, furniture, screens, shades, upholstery, stage curtains, auditorium seating and building framework
  • Installs finished hardware such as, but not limited to window or door locks, hinges, screens, or other related work
  • Installs floor boards and floor coverings such as linoleum tile, VCT, carpet tiles or other sheet goods
  • May make minor roof repairs in association with District’s roofer or as needed
  • Hang various items in a safe and secure manner, which may include plaques, pictures/frames, banners, inspection certificates (i.e. pool, elevator, boilers, health department.)
  • Constructs minor buildings or small additions relating to existing structures
  • Will assist other departments as needed to ensure all carpentry related work is performed according to safety standards
  • Uses and performs operator maintenance on tools and equipment common to the trade, such as but not limited to planers, joiners, sanders, saws and drills
  • Keeps accurate record of time and materials used to successfully complete job tasks using written and/or computer-generated formats
  • May perform minor supervisory jobs as needed
  • May be required to perform other duties as required at a level of skill the same as or lower than required by his/her normal work assignment
  • May performs minor supervisory role when designated a “Leader” on specific projects
  • Must be able to perform work that involves the possible disturbance of asbestos containing materials (ACMs)
  • Must be medically and physically able to wear a respirator
  • Maintains positive communication with maintenance shop personnel, trade foreman, shop administration, and school personnel to enhance cooperative action in order to meet the educational needs of students
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district administration and community
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including the ability to listen and effectively respond to instruction
  • Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions
  • Ability to identify complex problems, review related information to develop, evaluate and recommend options and implement solutions
  • Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents and/or ratios
