About The Position

The Heinrich Böll Foundation Washington, DC is seeking a Foreign Policy and Communications intern for Spring 2027. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work closely with the program director for Foreign & Security Policy and the Head of Communications. The Foreign & Security Policy program focuses on a broad conception of security policy, aiming to foster transatlantic and global solidarity for a more peaceful, feminist, and sustainable future. The communications team engages in a wide range of activities, from writing internal briefings to designing graphics that simplify complex issues.

Requirements

  • Experience in the relevant program area.
  • A genuine interest in the values and mission of the foundation.
  • Competent command of English (German is not a requirement).
  • A full-time commitment of 40 hours per week for 3 to 6 months (part-time only on a case-by-case basis).
  • At least 2 years of university-level experience.
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program OR recent (< 1 year) Bachelor's degree recipients.
  • US-style resume.
  • Cover letter.
  • Challenge statement (max 250 words) on a recent development in international relations, discussing its impact on a progressive vision for a multilateral world and recommending reforms for a more inclusive system. The challenge statement should be included in the same document as the cover letter.

Responsibilities

  • Provide logistical support for the preparation and implementation of visitor programs and events.
  • Manage front desk duties.
  • Manage contact and program-specific databases.
  • Develop social media content and communications strategies.
  • Update content on the foundation's website and blogs.
  • Write copy and analysis for various formats.
  • Conduct background research on topical issues and current events.
  • Prepare research for upcoming events, tours, and speaker's series.
  • Complete a capstone project, which could be a policy paper, an interview with policy experts, a script for an explanatory video, or a series of blog pieces/op-eds.

  • A monthly stipend of $700 for full-time positions and proportionally less for part-time.
  • 5 paid vacation days per 3-month period for full-time internships.
