Movement FoundationCharlotte, NC

About The Position

Movement Schools is seeking a passionate, mission-aligned K-5 Foreign Language Teacher to join its North Carolina school community. This role is for educators who believe early language instruction is a powerful tool for cultural understanding, identity development, and expanded opportunity. The teacher will design and lead engaging, standards-aligned world language instruction in the target language (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, French, ASL) to build elementary scholar communication skills across listening, speaking, and beginning reading and writing. The goal is to create an immersive, structured, and joyful environment where K-5 scholars develop confidence, cultural awareness, and lifelong language skills. In addition to teaching, the role involves supporting school-wide operations to ensure the campus runs smoothly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in the target language of the role, World Languages, Linguistics, Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) teaching license in the target world language (K–12) — Initial Professional License (IPL), Continuing Professional License (CPL), or Residency License — OR eligibility to obtain through an approved NC alternative licensure pathway.
  • Passing score on the NCSBE-approved Pearson content licensure exam for the target world language (per NCDPI policy LICN-003), or willingness to attempt within the first year and pass by the third year of an IPL. Note: for languages without a Pearson exam, NCDPI may accept alternative content verification such as ACTFL proficiency assessments.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the target language at the Advanced-Low level or higher on the ACTFL OPI — or at the Intermediate-High level for non-Roman-alphabet languages.
  • Ability to pass a North Carolina criminal history background check pursuant to N.C.G.S. §§ 115C-218.90 and 115C-332.
  • Documentation of a negative TB skin test (or chest X-ray) as required by the school's health policies.
  • Commitment to Movement Schools' mission, values, and high expectations for all scholars.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching experience in an elementary (K-5) school setting.
  • Native or near-native fluency in the target language of the role.
  • Experience teaching in an immersion, dual-language, or world language program.
  • Training in TPRS, comprehensible input, or other proficiency-based methodologies.
  • Lived, studied, or worked in a country or community where the target language is spoken.
  • National Board Certification in World Languages Other Than English.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver standards-aligned K-5 world language instruction grounded in the ACTFL World-Readiness Standards and the North Carolina World Language Essential Standards.
  • Develop scholar proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.
  • Use comprehensible input, target-language immersion, and engaging instructional strategies (TPRS, total physical response, authentic resources, etc.) appropriate to scholar level.
  • Build cultural literacy through authentic texts, music, traditions, and global perspectives.
  • Assess scholar growth using performance-based assessments aligned to ACTFL proficiency benchmarks.
  • Differentiate instruction to support scholars with diverse abilities, including those with IEPs and 504 plans, and heritage learners where applicable.
  • Build strong relationships with scholars, families, and staff.
  • Support school-wide culture, arrival/dismissal duties, transitions, and family engagement events.
  • Participate in coaching cycles, professional development, and grade-level planning.
  • Lead or support cultural celebrations, language clubs, or family engagement events that build community.
  • Support school-wide operations during non-instructional blocks — including arrival and dismissal duties, lunch and recess coverage, hallway transitions, family engagement events, and other operational needs as assigned.
