About The Position

Under the general supervision of Team Physicians and Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, this position provides athletic training services that lead to screening for preventative programs, treatment, rehabilitation, and referral of student-athletes to Team Physicians. Principally, the position provides athletic training services for Football in an integrated environment of all intercollegiate sports according to Departmental policy, Big Ten and NCAA rules. Key interactions are with the Head Football Athletic Trainer, the Team Physicians, the coaches, and the student-athletes in the performance of duties. An ability to work with diverse cultures and personalities is required as well as a desire to interact in a team approach with other staff members and medical professionals.

Requirements

  • Athletic Training Certification from the BOC AT
  • Wisconsin Athletic Trainer License
  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a similar field, is required.

  • Eligibility to work in the United States on or before the effective date of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates patients and screening for referral to orthopedic and primary care sports medicine clinics.
  • Performs illness and post-injury evaluation of student-athletes according to physician protocol for referral to appropriate physicians' clinics.
  • Follows instructions for injury recovery by Team Physicians to make return to play decisions.
  • Documents patient interactions into electronic health record.
  • Provides injury/illness updates to the coaching staff on the activity status of each player to assure safety in practice and competition.
  • Prepares practice and competition sites for emergency treatment and safety measures.
  • Works with Athletic Training Education Program students and serves as a clinical preceptor.
  • Is familiar with Departmental Emergency Plan for practice and competition and be prepared to initiate during practice and competition as well as provide CPR/AED and on field extrication.
  • Monitors environmental conditions to insure safety of student-athletes during practice and competition.
  • Attends and serves as an athletic trainer in a physician clinic as assigned.
  • Communicates all pertinent information regarding student athlete injury or illness status to team physicians for determination of safety in practice and competition.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.
  • Evaluates, provides treatment and rehabilitation, and documents injuries/illnesses in consultation with health care professionals and in accordance with established practices, guidelines, and protocols.
  • Coordinates patient care, makes referrals to various medical resources, and provides information based on injury/illness evaluations in collaboration with medical professionals.
  • Serves as an onsite health care provider for assigned teams during practices, competitions, recreational play, or special events to ensure adequate treatment of injuries/illness and appropriate response to emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Advises, develops, and implements plans for injury and illness prevention, emergencies, and environmental monitoring to ensure safety of participants during practices, recreational play, events, and competitions.
