About The Position

This role serves a dual purpose, providing support to the food service team and acting as a classroom floater. As a Food Service Tech, the primary responsibilities include assisting with dishwashing, clean-up, kitchen sanitation, and food preparation for both Head Start and Early Head Start programs. As a Classroom Floater, the role involves assisting and cooperating with teaching staff by relieving them for breaks and planning time, while promoting the health, safety, nutrition, and education of children aged birth to five. The position requires adherence to Head Start Program Performance Standards, state licensing requirements, and agency policies, while maintaining positive relationships with staff and families.

Requirements

  • Minimum of High school Degree or GED.
  • Previous experience in a professional food production operation which includes dishwashing.
  • Knowledge of approved sanitation methods.
  • Basic literacy skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to supervise children (birth to five) and ensure a safe environment.
  • Ability to monitor and respond to events in the classroom, bus, outdoor play areas, and on field trips.
  • Physical ability to move quickly to respond to active children.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Pass a physical examination.
  • Complete Tuberculosis (TB) test every three years with negative results.
  • Maintain a current First Aid, CPR, and CPI certification (training provided).
  • Valid driver's license with a driving record in compliance with RCCDC's insurance carrier requirements.
  • Continuous standing and walking for most of a 7.5 hour work day.
  • Frequent daily bending and lifting of bulk foods and food bins (10-70 lbs) from the floor and work tables.
  • Regular crouching, kneeling, stooping.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Regular reaching to retrieve items from storage shelves and cupboards up to 8 feet high.
  • Ability to perform duties in an active environment with changes in climate and noise level.
  • Daily kneeling, stooping, bending, and sitting on the floor to attend to children's needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Some food service work experience preferred.
  • Experience working with children in a group setting preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with dishwashing, clean-up, and kitchen sanitation.
  • Assist with food preparation following standardized recipes and daily menus.
  • Adhere to sanitation and safety procedures for food handling, storage, and preparation.
  • Prepare and sort food for meal preparation for classrooms.
  • Assemble food, dishes, utensils, and supplies for meal preparation.
  • Wash dishes, pots, pans, and utensils using approved sanitation methods.
  • Complete routine maintenance and deep cleaning of the kitchen and equipment.
  • Perform visual safety checks and report needed repairs.
  • Follow written recipes and use portion control methods.
  • Determine daily food quantities for preparation.
  • Deliver meals from the kitchen to classrooms.
  • Assist with generating In-Kind contributions.
  • Relieve teaching staff for breaks and planning time in classrooms.
  • Promote health, safety, nutrition, and education of children.
  • Adapt planned activities, materials, and equipment for children with special needs.
  • Perform care-giving activities such as feeding, toileting, and dressing.
  • Become familiar with individualized programs or behavior plans for each child.
  • Assist with implementing behavior management plans.
  • Utilize disciplinary measures appropriately.
  • Assist in creating an atmosphere that promotes parental engagement.
  • Assist in preparing an annual inventory of classroom supplies and equipment.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
