About The Position

The Food Service Worker is an integral member of the team. The Food Service Worker is responsible for food preparation, serving meals, cleaning and sanitizing of dining areas, and operating dishwashers by following the manufacturer’s instructions and Alberta Health guidelines. The Food Services Worker receives support and direction from the Lead Cook.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Minimum 1 year experience in an institutional or commercial kitchen.
  • Strong knowledge of health, and safety standards.
  • Must practice high standards of cleanliness and sanitization.
  • Must have good communication skills and be able to work in a team setting.
  • Must maintain good relationships with other Food Services personnel and other facility employees.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to lift and operate heavy objects.
  • The ability to work within the mandate of The Salvation Army Mission Statement, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.
  • All Food Services Workers are required to wear close-toed, non-skid shoes. These shoes are a personal expense and must always be worn.

Nice To Haves

  • Food Safe certification would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a variety of foods for service and catering including, but not limited to, cutting and peeling produce, preparation of proteins for cooking, slicing and cutting proteins, soup preparation, salads, sandwiches and appetizer preparation, cutting and plating desserts, salads, sandwiches, and catering platters.
  • Portion and wrap the food or place it directly on plates for service.
  • Store food in designated containers and storage areas to prevent spoilage. Ensure all stored items are covered, labeled, and dated.
  • Organize, clean, and rotate items in coolers and freezers to ensure freshness; discard spoiled items. General cleaning of the coolers and freezers.
  • Follow and comply with all Alberta Health Services food-safe regulations.
  • Report unsafe practices or professional misconduct to the Food Services Manager or designate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Clean work areas, equipment, utensils, dishes, and silverware as per Alberta Health Services requirements and as needed.
  • Sanitize work areas, dining room tables, and chairs as per Alberta Health Services requirements and as needed.
  • Take out garbage and recyclables daily and when needed.
  • Record dishwasher and sanitizer PPM’s daily.
  • General cleanup as required.
  • As appropriate to the position, serve food items to clients/residents from counters and steam tables, by specific instructions, ensuring that appropriate portions are served.
