About The Position

This role involves overseeing an inmate/detainee worker program within a correctional facility's kitchen. The Food Service Worker is responsible for training, supervising, and assigning tasks to inmate workers, ensuring proper food preparation, sanitation, and adherence to safety practices. This includes managing deliveries, maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, and potentially adjusting menus based on food costs. The position requires strong communication, organizational, and time management skills, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with specific experience in food preparation management or correctional/law enforcement roles.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.
  • Wage-earning experience in correctional, commercial, or institutional food preparation service management OR eighteen months of correctional custody or law enforcement experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Nice To Haves

  • Correctional or institutional food service experience preferred.
  • Experience in the supervision of employees or offenders preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees inmate/detainee worker program, including orientation and training on duties, sanitation, and hand washing.
  • Assigns daily kitchen tasks to inmate workers and supervises their performance to ensure organized and timely completion.
  • Provides verbal direction and warnings to inmate workers as needed.
  • Prepares, assists, or instructs inmate/detainee labor in food preparation according to departmental standards, recipes, and instructions.
  • Follows facility housekeeping and safety practices during meal preparation, oversight, and serving.
  • Checks in deliveries, verifies items, and ensures correct temperatures.
  • Stocks incoming food and supplies in their proper places, prioritizing frozen and perishable items.
  • Compiles weekly kitchen inventory and maintains records in the computer inventory system.
  • Maintains a current physical inventory of items needing to be ordered.
  • Orders groceries and other kitchen supplies.
  • Adjusts menus if necessary due to increased food costs.
