About The Position

George Brown Polytechnic is seeking a Part-Time Food Service Worker to join their team. This role is responsible for various food preparation, serving, and cleaning duties within a food service environment, primarily supporting children's programs. The position requires adherence to health and safety standards, including allergy management and food temperature monitoring. The worker will also assist with general program support tasks and maintain kitchen hygiene and equipment.

Requirements

  • Minimum Secondary School completion or equivalency.
  • Food Handler’s course and Safety awareness.
  • Minimum one-year (1) experience working in a busy food service environment, preferably in a health or service industry.
  • Fundamental knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS.
  • First aid certificate.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment following established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to exhibit excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills with teaching staff, children, families, and all stakeholders.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a busy, noisy environment with interruptions while remaining calm and organized.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform various cleaning duties; must be thorough and conscientious.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and display good judgment and have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision; strong time-management skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated commitment to uphold the polytechnic’s priorities on equity, diversity, inclusion and Indigenization (EDII).

Nice To Haves

  • Food Service Worker Certificate or several completed courses from certificate in progress.

Responsibilities

  • Unpack and distribute food containers from caterers and prepare for next day pickup.
  • Organize, prepare, and set up snacks, check allergy lists, and place appropriate food/milk substitutions on trays.
  • Take food temperatures before serving, cover food, and store it appropriately.
  • Check food received from caterers, document temperatures, label and date food, rotate stock, and check for spoilage.
  • Document actions on monthly record sheets, post menus, and ensure food restrictions are up-to-date.
  • Maintain and clean appliances including dishwasher, freezer, fridge, oven, and stove.
  • Clean and disinfect countertops, shelves, pantry, bins, sinks, and service trolleys.
  • Flush water taps and submit logs.
  • Maintain floors by sweeping and washing.
  • Transfer laundry from washer to dryer and assist with 'sleep time' and other routines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
