About The Position

This is an entry-level position in the Food Services Worker series. Employees in this class perform the full range of duties related to preparing, packaging, and serving meals, as well as cleaning the cafeteria area. They receive occasional instruction for new or unusual situations and are familiar with cafeteria operating procedures and policies. This role is distinguished from higher-level positions by the lack of responsibilities for meal planning, cooking, or supervising in the absence of higher-ranking staff.

Requirements

  • Basic Math skills
  • Record keeping practices applicable to a food service operation
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices applicable to food handling
  • Basic computer skills for emails and keeping track of inventory for ordering purposes
  • Ability to work with children and supervisors in a courteous and effective manner
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to count money and issue change
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to learn cash handling techniques
  • Ability to maintain consistent, punctual, and regular attendance
  • Ability to maintain food service equipment and facilities in clean and sanitary conditions
  • Ability to establish and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Experience working with young people
  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance

Responsibilities

  • Prepare food service areas for the serving of meals, including breakfast, lunch, and after-school programs.
  • Prepare and package meals and salads, including cutting fruit and mixing salads, and packing hot and cold lunches.
  • Prepare food for the snack bar, such as making sandwiches and wrapping cookies.
  • Heat and distribute meals and food items to children during mealtime periods.
  • Tally the names of children being served according to defined procedures.
  • Collect money, balance and reconcile the cash drawer, and operate the cash register.
  • Assist in supervising students in the lunchroom/cafeteria areas.
  • Clean areas after meal service, including wiping tables, cleaning up spills, and putting away supplies.
  • Stock supplies and food, order supplies, and maintain inventory records of supplies, received food, and food waste.
  • Clean and maintain the kitchen area, including washing implements, trays, cleaning tables, picking up trash, cleaning racks, defrosting freezers, applying oven cleaner, and cleaning ovens, shelves, storage areas, and other food preparation equipment.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
