About The Position

Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) at the Iowa City VA Medical Center is hiring full-time Food Service Workers to provide service in its cafes and retail markets. The role suits team members who enjoy a fast-paced environment and are committed to serving America's Heroes.

The Food Service Worker/Barista prepares beverages and food items, fulfills customer orders, and maintains a clean and sanitary work area. The position involves exposure to varying hot and cold temperatures and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
• Ability to read instructions and perform basic math for food preparation.
• Ability to stand constantly, walk, and bend frequently.
• Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Must complete a one-year trial period and receive written certification for continued employment.
• Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
• Subject to a background/security investigation.

Nice To Haves

• At least one year of food service industry experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Prepare beverages such as coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies.
• Prepare and assemble food items such as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos.
• Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the workplace, equipment, and utensils in compliance with health and safety standards.
• Store food properly to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
• Prepare foods according to customer orders or supervisors' instructions and follow approved procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
