About The Position

The Special Commitment Center (SCC) on McNeil Island is seeking a Full-Time and On-Call Food Service Supervisor to oversee and coordinate food service operations. In this supervisory role, you will manage the preparation and serving of all meals - including special dietary foods - while guiding and supervising civil commitment residents and staff. You will assist in planning and organizing food service activities, directing large-scale cooking operations in an institutional kitchen, and ensuring meals are prepared safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established standards. This position plays a vital role in supporting the health, nutrition, and overall well-being of residents within the facility. The Special Commitment Center (SCC) provides mental health treatment for individuals civilly committed as sexually violent predators after their prison sentences. Located on McNeil Island, SCC offers a secure environment with a structured treatment program aimed at reducing the risk of re-offense. The center collaborates with legal, correctional, and behavioral health partners to support resident progress and ensure court-ordered reviews. SCC staff play a crucial role in balancing public safety with the treatment and legal rights of residents.

Requirements

  • An associate degree in food service management, nutritional care, or a related field and at least two years of experience in institutional or restaurant food preparation or service.
  • OR An equivalent combination of education and experience, totaling four years.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and direct employees, residents, and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of large-scale food preparation, serving practices, and related procedures.
  • Knowledge of personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation, and safety precautions.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations, solving problems, and making decisions.
  • Maintain clear observation of residents, work areas, and equipment to ensure safety and security.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, disruptive behaviors, or safety issues in a special commitment center environment.
  • Knowledge of care, maintenance, and proper use of kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Employees driving on state business must have a valid driver's license.
  • Employees driving a privately owned vehicle on state business must have liability insurance on the privately owned vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and direct residents, staff, and volunteers in daily food production and service.
  • Maintain order, discipline, and safety in all food program areas, intervening when necessary, using approved protocols.
  • Oversee meal preparation, portioning, menu modifications, and ensure timely delivery of food.
  • Ensure compliance with sanitation, safety, and proper equipment use throughout kitchen and dining areas.
  • Receive, inspect, and manage food and supply inventory, ensuring proper storage and rotation.
  • Maintain accurate records, including worksheets, recipes, employee evaluations, schedules, and procurement reports.
  • Lead daily staff meetings, assign work, and assume kitchen management in the absence of Food Managers.
  • Respond to emergencies or safety issues, including disruptive resident behaviors, following approved procedures.
