About The Position

The Food Service Specialist ensures that appropriate quantities of food are prepared, portioned, and served to IDEA students. This role involves preparing food, following recipes, adhering to kitchen processes, monitoring students during meal times, and performing kitchen cleaning duties. The specialist will cut and chop fruits and vegetables, monitor student behavior during meals, encourage consumption of fresh produce, ensure no food sharing, and maintain kitchen cleanliness through sweeping, mopping, wiping tables, washing dishes, and disposing of trash.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand food recipes.
  • Ability to understand safe handling of food and sanitation practices.
  • Working knowledge of kitchen/food production procedures.
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment, tools, and utensils.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills.
  • Works well under pressure in a team setting.
  • Ability to lift, bend, pull, push, and twist.
  • High School Diploma Preferred but Not Required.
  • Food service or restaurant experience preferred, but not required.
  • Food Handler’s Permit (City of County).
  • Possess an interest or passion for working with food.
  • Has a basic knowledge or can quickly learn of food production processes.
  • Can meet the physical demands of the job (lifting, bending, walking, etc.).
  • Has a basic knowledge of providing service to customers (students).
  • Understand how to read and execute recipes.
  • Must be able to handle working with medium to large equipment (i.e. ovens, slicer, steamer, etc.).
  • Have basic math skills that directly relate to portioning food items in small trays.
  • Takes pride in food that is prepared and served to the students.
  • Can take direction and feedback well.
  • Must be able to adapt quickly.
  • Can take feedback well, especially during mid-year and end-of-year reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, portion, and serve food to students.
  • Cut and chop fruits and vegetables.
  • Follow recipes and established kitchen processes.
  • Monitor students during meal periods for appropriate behavior.
  • Encourage students to consume more fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Ensure no sharing of food among students.
  • Perform kitchen cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, wiping tables, washing dishes, and disposing of trash.
  • Operate kitchen equipment, tools, and utensils.
  • Perform basic math skills related to portioning food items.
  • Handle working with medium to large kitchen equipment such as ovens, slicers, and steamers.
  • Adapt quickly to changing tasks, such as switching from serving food to washing dishes.
  • Work around or with an academic calendar, including breaks like Spring Break, Summer Break, Thanksgiving Break, and Winter Break.
  • Work 8 hours per day during regular school days.
  • Potentially work on Saturdays depending on the campus.
