About The Position

The Food Service Specialist will be responsible for daily operations of the school meal service, supporting our scholars’ goals and the high-quality instruction provided at LEARN D.C. This role will ensure compliance with all related local, state, and federal laws regarding food service.

Requirements

  • You have a Certified Food Handler License in the District of Columbia or can obtain a license quickly.
  • You have at least 1 year of food service experience (ideally 2+ preferred).
  • You have a demonstrated track record of organizational skills and following strict food safety guidelines.
  • You have a record of living LEARN’s Core Values.
  • You can lift up to 50 pounds, in addition to having good multitasking skills.
  • You demonstrate our core values by setting high expectations for yourself and our scholars, along with bringing a customer service focus and consistently positive attitude.
  • You possess proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google applications, databases, and intranet and internet usage, and a working knowledge of nutritional guidelines.
  • You have strong organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, adhering to strict timelines.
  • You are an adaptive and comfortable interacting with students and families.
  • You demonstrate professional demeanor with a high degree of initiative and independent judgment, plus the capacity to tactfully and effectively deal with families, students and staff in a personable and professional manner.

Responsibilities

  • Serving healthy meals to students and ensuring a hygienic and well-organized cafeteria.
  • Meeting all local, state, and federal requirements for proper food handling, storage, disposal, and sanitation of the cafeteria.
  • Assisting with the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).
  • Planning and coordinating the menu in conjunction with the Operations Coordinator.
  • Maintaining all necessary equipment and records, including point of service requirements as required by federal law
  • Obtaining any mandatory training, including food service certification.
  • Ensuring adherence to Healthy Schools Act requirements and to any applicable safety requirements.
