Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency and evidence of successful completion of adult school, college-level, or equivalent courses supervision.
  • 1 year of experience in commercial or institutional quantity food preparation, including the serving of a major meal component of at least 50 meals per day.
  • Six months of experience supervising, training, and evaluating the work performance of other food service employees may be substituted for the supervision class requirement.
  • A valid “ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certificate”, issued by the National Restaurant Association or equivalent.
  • A valid Los Angeles Unified School District Food Handler’s Heath Certificate.
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation may be required for some positions.
  • Successful completion of a two week Managers Certification Course (MCC) upon initial assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and participating in the preparation, heating or cooking, assembling, and serving of food for students and faculty.
  • Maintaining food quality standards, including appearance, flavor, and portion control.
  • Planning menus and following standardized recipes to prepare or heat food; manages food cost, waste, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and district meal requirements at the school site.
  • Supervising food service personnel by setting up work schedules, assigning and directing work, evaluating work performance, counseling, recommending disciplinary action, and providing on-the-job training of food service personnel and student employees.
  • Ordering food and supplies and ensuring the availability of required items, proper storage and use.
  • Checking goods received against requisitions and invoices and contacts Stores Section personnel and vendors to correct errors.
  • Preparing and reviews production reports to support planning related to ordering, storage, sales, and student participation, with a focus on cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency.
  • Responsible for entering and retrieving meal participation data using designated District software systems.
  • Taking daily and monthly inventories of food and supplies.
  • Utilizing cost control procedures to avoid unwarranted cafeteria operations costs.
  • Monitoring and supporting food service staff in delivering courteous and efficient service to students and school personnel at their school site.
  • Following approved Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) housekeeping and safety practices to ensure that sanitary working conditions are maintained in food service environments.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and maintaining records, and reports, including financial documentation as required by the Food Services Division.
  • Responsible for all cash deposits, follows cash handling procedures, and ensures that daily bank deposits are made by authorized personnel.
  • Initiates and follows up with the Plant Manager on requests for equipment repairs or replacement, pest control services, facility sanitation, and maintains service records.
  • Implementing security measures to prevent vandalism and theft.
  • Maintaining daily records of hours worked by employees.
  • Preparing various correspondence and/or documentation regarding employee conduct.
  • Ensuring that meals and service meet federal, State and District meal requirements.
  • Following prescribed procedures to protect the anonymity of students who receive free or reducedprice meals.
  • Responsible, as needed per program requirements, for processing applications for free and reducedprice meals.
  • Providing information concerning food service programs to community groups, parents, students, and District personnel.
  • Ensuring food services staff provide professional and appropriate customer services and supports the food service program by facilitating feedback through established school and district processes.
  • May operate special feeding programs both on- and off-site.
  • May provide food service for special events as requested and approved by the Food Services Division.
  • May transport food and supplies between locations.
