About The Position

Plans, coordinates, and supervises the installation, maintenance, repairs, and scheduled replacements of the department of School Nutrition’s food service equipment and cafeteria tables. Performs a variety of skilled, master's level tasks associated with these duties. Provides technical advice and production assistance when necessary and inspects all major projects. Develops and refines the work routine of assigned personnel and contractors. Carries assignments through to completion. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Coordinator of Trades and Facilities Management in conjunction with the Senior Director of School Nutrition. Incumbents are responsible for the efficient, timely, and economical accomplishment of work assigned to level I, level II, and level III trades personnel classifications and contractors. This position reflects the master’s level of the Food Service Equipment Mechanic trades series. Supervisory and maintenance tasks are performed in the central kitchen and in school kitchens operated by the department of School Nutrition. The incumbent supervises the day-to-day operations of crews and contractors within established policies and guidelines and is responsible for the efficient, timely, and economical accomplishment of assigned work and evaluation of staff. The individual assigned to this classification may occasionally be required to work evenings or be on call evenings or weekends to respond to emergencies.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school, including or supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship training.
  • Considerably and progressively more responsible experience in the trade, some of which shall have been at the master's level, or equivalent.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid automotive vehicle operator's license approved and accepted by The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of methods and practices used in commercial foodservice and knowledge of local and national codes where applicable.
  • Ability to plan and perform the work of the trade at the full master’s level.
  • Ability to observe, monitor, train, assign, lead, and make recommendations concerning subordinates and contractors.
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of outside contractors, including the ability to prepare bid proposals.
  • Ability to perform well under emergency repair or changing work priority situations.
  • Ability to utilize diagrams, blueprints, schematics, manufacturers manuals, mathematical skills, and technology to estimate time and materials needed.
  • Ability to carry out responsibilities within established policies, plans, procedures, and requirements.
  • Ability to coordinate work with other shops and departments.
  • Ability to enforce safety and other regulations where applicable.
  • Ability to estimate costs and necessary materials of work performed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships, including successful training, coaching, and counseling of subordinates.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office and/or Google Docs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a large-scale, commercial food service environment is preferred.
  • Obtains State of Virginia Type 60 Pesticide Applicator Certificate and FOG Certification within six months after hire.

  • Maintains and reports on staff time and attendance.
  • Enters requisitions and receivers into MUNIS ERP.
  • Codes and reconciles credit card purchases.
  • Investigates and resolves discrepancies in billing statements.
  • Manages accounts payable to contractors and vendors.
  • Schedules and approves leave.
  • Takes informal and recommends formal corrective action on complaints, conduct, or performance problems.
  • Evaluates performance of subordinates.
  • Provides for training and cross-training of subordinates.
  • Initiates requests for tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Maintains records.
  • Participates in the review and improvement of work methods.
  • Participates in employee selection and promotion activities.
  • Coordinates the installation and repair of gas and electric kitchen appliances and control devices, including kitchen hood systems, food trucks, and indoor hydroponic gardens.
  • Troubleshoots, tests, repairs, calibrates, maintains, or modifies commercial food service equipment, including complex electrical and natural gas systems.
  • Operates and maintains hand and power tools, including meters, gauges, soldering irons, gas detectors, torches, and welding equipment.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Ensures the safety of the work area.
  • Drives a company vehicle to and from work locations, keeping it supplied with tools and materials.
  • Requisitions parts and materials from vendors and supply houses.
  • Performs operator maintenance on the vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition.
  • Responds to situations and work in conditions where the potential for injury, loss of life, and damage to property is present.
  • Responds to emergency situations caused by vandalism, material failures, and/or natural acts.
  • Performs related assignments as directed.
