About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a part-time Food Service Assistant. This role is responsible for learning all duties in assigned areas, including food production, preparation, storage, accountability, and safety/sanitation procedures. The assistant will help with production schedules and prepare high-quality, attractive food in necessary amounts. This position works 4 hours or more daily, may involve cashier duties, and can be assigned to any work area or department, including elementary and potentially secondary school single preparation roles.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Good organizational, record keeping and telephone skills
  • Ability to lift 35# alone and 50# and above with assistance
  • Must be able to stand continuously throughout assigned shift
  • Job requires bending, stooping, kneeling, and pushing and pulling
  • Health permits full participation in all food service related tasks and meets requirements of Board Of Education
  • Must complete a minimum of 15 hours of training during the first year of employment and 10 hours per year thereafter.
  • Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios.
  • Ability to understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of quantify food preparation and handling.
  • Knowledge of sanitation practices.
  • Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively to co-workers, students, staff, and visitors.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and work at a consistent pace.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to occasionally lift items with assistance of 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and complete required job-related training classes and workshops.
  • Practice appropriate HACCP procedures to ensure proper sanitation and safety standards are met in food preparation, serving, and storage.
  • Follow instructions for preparing, portioning, garnishing, and serving meals, as well as storing food and maintaining equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain the highest quality of production using only district-approved standardized recipes.
  • Demonstrate efficient and productive use of time and resources to meet established productivity standards.
  • Accurately maintain all required records and forms, including time sheets, absence reports, and food/supply usage records.
  • Communicate positively with students, co-workers, school staff, and parents.
  • Assist other food service workers with their tasks and serve as a replacement worker for absent employees.
  • Follow procedures in personnel matters, including grievance, absence, job bidding, and dress code.
  • Perform any food service-related tasks as assigned by supervisors.
  • Follow District/Department policies and procedures.
  • Flex scheduling may occur based on department needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
