About The Position

This role is for a Food Scientist focusing on poultry Cost Optimization, Innovation, Technology Development, and Quality improvement. The position involves developing emerging technologies, optimizing costs, and commercializing new and improved products and/or processes under the guidance of a manager. This includes all stages of product and process development, such as writing new product specifications, ensuring regulatory labeling, and meeting food safety requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of scientific methods and leverage knowledge of ingredients, product formulation, and food processing to develop innovative food products. Applying to this requisition will put candidates into consideration for either Food Scientist I or Food Scientist II, with the final level determined during the interview process.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Food Science, Meat Science, Food Engineering, or related field.
  • For Food Scientist I: PhD or MS with no experience; BS with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; No degree with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience.
  • For Food Scientist II: PhD with no experience; MS with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; BS with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; No degree with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience.
  • Alt. Protein science or equivalent experience is also considered for Food Scientist II.
  • Good computer skills with the ability to fully utilize MS Office products and Tyson systems (or like systems).
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Work with and influence marketing, insights, sales, culinary, FSQA, operations, and purchasing departments, coordinating with suppliers of ingredients, and ensuring smooth start-up for new product production processes.
  • Modify or optimize existing products, develop specifications for product production labeling, and compile cost analysis information.
  • Work on multiple development and optimization projects of moderate complexity independently, from concept through commercialization with manager guidance, including planning, executing experiments, analyzing data, and reporting results.
  • Execute the development process with activities including benchtop development, pilot plant testing, scale-up production at a federally inspected research facility, and final commercialization at a full-scale production facility.
  • Help the team identify innovation that can be treated as intellectual property to give Tyson a competitive edge.
  • Analyze data to build product specifications that are process capable.
  • Present technical data or concepts to laypersons at their level of understanding.
  • Compile cost analysis information and provide it to product management.
  • Ensure costing structures meet the financial expectations of projects.
  • Work on cross-functional teams across the organization for project completion to achieve growth and EBIT strategies.
  • Travel to plant product facilities.
  • Take on and complete special projects as needed.
  • Develop culinary samples/prototypes of new products, modify existing products, optimize existing products, and develop specifications.
  • Develop product production labels and compile cost analysis information.
  • Leverage knowledge related to ingredients, product formulation, and food processing to support best-in-class development of new, innovative food products.
  • Work with process development to develop process flow charts for engineering.
  • Develop a personal development plan with your manager.
  • May supervise a team of hourly technicians that support a team of scientists.
