About The Position

The purpose of the Food & Nutrition Specialist position is to provide support for Hope Express, Medically Tailored Meals, Fresh Choice Food Program and all other food/nutrition initiatives. This role involves preparing, cooking, and serving meals, conducting street outreach, coordinating program eligibility, maintaining donation records, and managing inventory. The specialist will also operate a mobile kitchen trailer, serve on the Emergency Disaster Services team, coordinate volunteers, and participate in case conferences and trainings. Accurate record-keeping, adherence to confidentiality standards (including HIPAA), and maintaining a detailed filing system are crucial. The position requires utilizing harm reduction and trauma-informed care principles in intake and care procedures, and regular monitoring of communications (emails and voicemails).

Requirements

  • Ability to speak and write the English language at a high and professional level
  • High degree of confidentiality
  • Able to endorse and promote The Salvation Army’s mission
  • Must possess ServSafe Food Handler certification
  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver License, and ability to drive a Salvation Army vehicle
  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Complete The Salvation Army vehicle course training
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check to include a DOJ Livescan Fingerprint check
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, and/or pull objects
  • Ability to reach overhead
  • Ability to operate telephone
  • Ability to lift up to 50-70 lbs.
  • Ability to operate a computer
  • Ability to process written, visual, and/or verbal information
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment and tools PC, Fax Machine, Telephone, Calculator, Copier, Printer

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum two (2) years of food service, social service/work and/or related experience preferred
  • Computer literate, in Windows environment (Microsoft Office), Word, Excel and Outlook preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent and professional telephone etiquette and presence
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong ability to utilize a high level of time management and handling multiple tasks

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, cook, and serve meals and snacks for Hope Express and Medically Tailored Meals
  • Conduct street outreach services
  • Coordinate intake and program eligibility for food & nutrition programs
  • Maintain gifts-in-kind donation records
  • Assist in the coordination of the Fresh Choice Food Program
  • Maintain inventory of food products, equipment and supplies
  • Operate and maintain the mobile kitchen trailer and assigned vehicle
  • Serve on the Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team
  • Coordinate assigned volunteers
  • Participate in weekly case conference meetings
  • Participate in program and agency trainings as assigned
  • Maintain accurate participant records in various information management systems; and generate reports as requested
  • Maintain and execute confidential information according to HIPPA standards
  • Maintain a highly detailed and organized filling system
  • Ensure intake and care procedures utilize harm reduction and trauma informed care principles
  • Check and respond to emails and voicemails on a regular basis
  • Adhere to confidentiality standards
  • Other duties as assigned
