About The Position

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking to fill a Food Inspector 2 position in Albany. This role involves direct supervision, training, and motivation of zone inspectors, including reviewing inspections, conducting audits, handling legal actions, and managing the Consumer Complaint Tracking system. The work assignments cover a range of food processors, specialty processors, warehouses, large grocery stores, and convenience stores. This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, based in Albany, with potential for telecommuting. Occasional statewide travel may be necessary, requiring a valid New York State driver's license and access to a vehicle.

Requirements

Must possess at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
Must have access to a motor vehicle when necessary or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the regular transportation requirements in carrying out their field work responsibilities.
One year of permanent, competitive service as a Food Inspector 1 (for Provisional Appointment).
Candidates must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and your score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before you can be permanently appointed (for Provisional Appointment).
One year of permanent, competitive service as a Food Inspector 1 (for Non-competitive Promotion).
One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 b/c service as a Food Inspector 2, G-23 (for Reassignment Qualifications).
Must be reachable on the current eligible list for this location if one exists (for Reassignment Qualifications, if less than one year of service).

Nice To Haves

Appointees may be required to travel out-of-state for overnight trips on occasion due to ongoing training commitments.

Responsibilities

Direct, day-to-day supervision, training, and motivation of all zone inspectors.
Review of all inspections conducted within the zone.
Routinely working with all inspectors assigned to the zone.
Holding zone meetings.
Maintaining the Consumer Complaint Tracking system.
Reviewing Daily reports.
Handling legal actions.
Conducting audits.
Supervisory reviews.
New inspector trainings.
Disseminate management directives and other tasks as necessary.
