About The Position

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) is seeking to hire a Flying Test Bed Lead Engineer. The Lead Engineer will plan, coordinate, and execute flight‑test campaigns for the RFS PC Flying Test Bed. This role interfaces directly with government ranges, the FAA, and other federal agencies to obtain experimental airworthiness approvals and ensure safe, compliant flight‑test operations. The engineer will lead a multi‑disciplinary working group (5‑10 engineers) and serve as the primary technical liaison to senior leadership, government customers, and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Ability to obtain Secret clearance, therefore you must be a US Citizen.
  • 5 + years of professional experience in flight‑test planning, execution, or range coordination.
  • Demonstrated experience obtaining FAA experimental airworthiness approvals and working with other government entities (DoD, NASA, etc.).
  • Proven ability to lead multi‑disciplinary teams (5‑10 engineers) in a high‑tempo, safety‑critical environment.
  • Strong knowledge of government range procedures, scheduling, and safety compliance.
  • Experience with platform integration (avionics, payloads, telemetry, test instrumentation).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; capable of presenting to senior leadership, customers, and regulatory officials.

  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Advanced coursework or certification in flight‑test engineering, airworthiness regulations, or aerospace systems engineering.
  • Familiarity with flight‑test data acquisition systems, telemetry, and post‑flight analysis tools.
  • Experience with risk management and safety case development for flight operations.
  • Prior involvement in government‑run range testing (e.g., flight test ranges, missile test ranges).
  • Experience with project management tools (MS Project, Primavera) and configuration management.
  • Knowledge of simulation environments (MATLAB/Simulink, STK) to support test planning.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the overall flight‑test master plan, including test objectives, timelines, risk assessments, and resource allocation.
  • Coordinate all activities with government range facilities (e.g., COTO, White Sands, Edwards) to secure range slots, address safety requirements, and manage range‑specific constraints.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of FAA experimental airworthiness certifications, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and guidance.
  • Oversee platform integration activities, including avionics, payloads, telemetry, and ground‑support equipment.
  • Conduct and chair weekly Flying Test Working Group meetings, driving decisions, assigning action items, and tracking progress.
  • Provide briefings and status reports to senior leadership, program managers, and government stakeholders.
  • Mentor and supervise a team of 5‑10 engineers from systems, software, mechanical, and test disciplines.
  • Ensure test data collection, analysis, and documentation meet program and contractual requirements.
