Fluids Engineer (Starship)

SpaceX•Brownsville, TX

About The Position

SpaceX is developing Starship, a launch system intended to expand access to space and enable a self-sustaining city on Mars. The production fluids team develops machinery for flight-like validation of vehicles and gas-generation farms that produce and distribute manufacturing and test gases throughout the production site. The Fluids Engineer develops production-grade automated fluids systems from the ground up to support Starship production testing and automation. The role uses multidisciplinary engineering skills to define problems, design solutions, and build and deploy systems. The engineer also supports vehicle test campaigns and operations, and works with the in-house build shop to scale manufacturing of the systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or another technical discipline.
  • At least 1 year of mechanical or fluids design, analysis, or build experience; student project team and internship experience qualifies.
  • Meet SpaceX’s ITAR eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of manufacturing design experience.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in aerospace, mechanical, or process engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience with GD&T concepts.
  • At least 2 years of experience with industrial waste, wastewater, or chemical processing.
  • At least 2 years of experience with oil and gas operations or processing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience with mechanical design, including basic structural calculations and design considerations.
  • Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter CAD.
  • Experience with fluid system design, build, and test.
  • Electrical schematic design experience.
  • Hands-on experience building and commissioning high-quality electrical control panels.
  • Experience in fast-paced, iterative design and manufacturing environments.
  • Experience solving complex problems with little to no supervision and on schedule, independently or as part of an integrated team.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deploy automated or manual fluids systems for high-rate production vehicle performance validation testing.
  • Design, build, and deploy data acquisition and control systems for monitoring and control.
  • Own integration, validation, and handoff to production of each test system at each deployed production cell.
  • Perform detailed fluids analysis to characterize and troubleshoot expected design performance.
  • Work with the in-house build shop to develop and own the scaling of the manufacturing line for the system.
  • Support critical vehicle test campaigns and operations, including troubleshooting and technical support.
  • Develop and maintain detailed timelines to capture and communicate project progress.
  • Make decisions in response to changing conditions and use feedback to iterate and develop the product and process.
  • Develop build, maintenance, and upgrade plans for new and existing equipment to maximize uptime.
