About The Position

UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary Floorlayer. This position is expected to be 6 months. This position is based at the Plant Services Building on the Seattle campus and is not eligible for telework. Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor 2, the Floorlayer performs journey-level flooring installation, repair, and maintenance work across a wide range of University facilities. This position supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus buildings by preparing surfaces and installing, repairing, and replacing carpet, tile, linoleum, vinyl, rubber base, and other flooring materials. The Floorlayer works collaboratively with supervisors, team members, and other trades to complete projects efficiently while maintaining high standards of workmanship, safety, and customer service in support of the University community.

Requirements

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a floorlayer or carpet layer; OR full journey status as a floorlayer or carpet layer in a union; OR four years’ applicable work experience.
  • Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

  • Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products
  • Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated excellent effective verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare surfaces for flooring installation by scraping, chipping, cleaning, and inspecting for damage.
  • Install, repair, and replace carpet, tile, linoleum, specialty vinyl, and rubber base materials.
  • Measure, cut, stretch, tack, sew, and finish flooring materials to specification.
  • Apply adhesives, grouts, pastes, and other installation materials safely and effectively.
  • Estimate labor, materials, and repair costs for flooring projects.
  • Operate flooring tools and equipment, including carpet stretchers, drills, hammers, forklifts, scissor lifts, and service vehicles.
  • Load, unload, transport, and organize tools, equipment, and materials at job sites.
  • Monitor project progress and communicate status, material needs, and issues with supervisors and team leads.
  • Collaborate with other facilities and maintenance teams to complete projects efficiently.
  • Train or provide guidance to semiskilled workers as assigned.
  • Follow all occupational safety regulations, SDS requirements, hazard review procedures, and PPE standards.
  • Provide professional customer service while complying with organizational policies, procedures, training, and assigned duties.
