About The Position

This role may be filled at the Apprentice or Journey level dependent upon qualifications. The Floor Operator I performs maintenance and operation of boiler and related equipment to provide for cost effective and safe generation. This position requires working effectively with other work team members and management on a rotating shift basis. The operator will assist the Control Room Operator in the overall operation of high pressure steam generators, steam turbine generator, and station auxiliaries for a given shift. The role is located at the Ottumwa Generating Station and is not subject to residency requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent Required
  • Good reading comprehension, mathematics skills
  • Ability to read P&ID’s, operating manuals, technical manuals
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend RIGHT TO KNOW information
  • Basic knowledge of First Aid and CPR
  • Ability to exercise good judgment during emergencies
  • Capacity for quick, accurate decisions and speed of execution
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must report to work fit for duty and free from the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

Responsibilities

  • Serve on a team to efficiently and safely operate the plant boiler and maintain it and associated equipment.
  • Work effectively with other work team members and management on a rotating shift basis.
  • Assist Control Room Operator in all operations.
  • Communicate with fellow employees in giving and receiving orders, keeping others informed, log book entries, etc.
  • Start, operate, inspect, and shut down all steam generators, steam turbine generating units and all associated auxiliary equipment as requested by CRO or management.
  • Observe and record pressures, temperatures and flows on all operating equipment and controls.
  • At direction of CRO, receive and execute orders relative to electric loads and switching instructions.
  • Operate all pumps, heaters, pulverizers and other auxiliary equipment; operate circulating water screens, pumps, chlorination equipment, condensers and air removal equipment.
  • Operate switchgear as instructed.
  • Make minor repairs and replacements on station equipment and report other maintenance requirements.
  • Supervise and assist in training of other operating employees.
  • Assist in Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures to take equipment out of service.
  • Clean boiler passes, preheaters, flues, ducts, ash pits and pyrites by removing ashes as required; inspect, operate and clean storage batteries and charging unit.
  • Operate plant while CRO is absent and/or in case of emergencies.
  • Perform PM and may assist with maintenance work.
  • Perform other related work as required for the safe, orderly, efficient and harmonious operation of the plant.
  • Report to work fit for duty and free from the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.
