About The Position

The Float Phlebotomist drives from location to location during the shift when necessary. This role requires planning and ensuring timely arrival at predetermined locations for blood collection on Executive Health Program clients and other patients. While most blood draws occur in the early morning for fasting labs, there's potential for draws at different times throughout the day. The position involves performing standardized and specialized phlebotomy procedures on patients of all ages in a safe, accurate, and professional manner. The Mobile Phlebotomist utilizes a personal vehicle, marked with a magnetic University of Kansas Health System sign, to travel to various Health System locations, and potentially to patients' homes or workplaces for blood collection. When not engaged in mobile phlebotomy duties, the Mobile Phlebotomist will be assigned to an ambulatory area to collect blood samples, process them, and assist with other pre-analytical tasks. This role adheres to regulatory, accreditation, safety, and hospital standards, policies, and procedures, and participates in quality assurance and improvement activities.

Requirements

High School Graduate
1 or more years of specimen collection and processing experience.
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Must be able to maintain alertness while driving long distances.
Fluent English - read, write, speak and understand English - must be able to communicate effectively in English.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of medical terminology related to blood collection.
Knowledge of safety practices.
Strong attention to detail.
Demonstrated skill with laboratory information systems.

Nice To Haves

1 or more years of Phlebotomy experience at TUKHS.
Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP) or AMT certification.
Intermediate Spanish - speak and understand Spanish.

Responsibilities

Present oneself in a professional manner at all times, adhering to the Mobile Phlebotomy Dress code of navy or black matching scrubs with a Kansas University Health System warm-up jacket.
Demonstrate exemplary customer service to Executive clients.
Perform emergency first aid as necessary and recognize the need for patient medical assistance, calling for support.
Ensure mobile phlebotomy totes are equipped with in-date supplies necessary for mobile collection.
Maintain a clean and well-maintained vehicle that properly displays a magnet tag identifying the University of Kansas Health System during working hours. Remove and store the magnet tag during off-hours to keep it clean and ready for next use.
Provide clear and accurate patient instructions for sample collection.
Process samples, including the use of a portable centrifuge, to ensure specimen quality is not diminished during transport.
When not performing mobile phlebotomy duties, collect blood samples, receive and process samples, and assist with other pre-analytical tasks in an ambulatory area.
Participate in teaching phlebotomy to CLS students, nursing staff, and new employees.
Provide mentoring and other training support for other employees as needed.
Be responsible for positive patient identification, specimen integrity, and sample labeling.
Adhere to hospital patient isolation precautions.
Dispose of blood drawing equipment according to health and safety regulations prescribed in hospital policy, ensuring no waste is left at a patient’s home or workplace.
May perform out-patient check-in and order-entry of laboratory tests in the laboratory information system (LIS) or release of appropriate laboratory tests in the hospital information system (HIS).
Utilize exemplary “concierge” customer service duties, including working efficiently and respectfully with all clients, arriving promptly, making sound decisions, prioritizing work, analyzing complex orders, and problem-solving as necessary.
Interact with customers and patients in a pleasant, respectful, professional, and cooperative manner, both in person and on the telephone at all times.
Maintain a professional image and adhere to the dress code established for Mobile Phlebotomy (solid navy or black matching scrubs provided by the University of Kansas Health System).
Perform pre-analytical duties, including sample processing and preparing specimens for transport.
During periods when not traveling, perform quality assurance tasks, result faxing, supply ordering, and receipt of surgical samples, tissues, and fluids from other departments.
Manage 24-hour urine collections and ensure the accuracy of labeling and patient ID prior to processing for transport to the lab.
Perform the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
