About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is seeking to hire a Nurse Practitioner to provide primary health care services at the Reception and Treatment Center. The selected candidate will join a staff of Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care professionals. This role involves performing health care services to patients/clients under the care of a state institution, working under the direct supervision of a licensed physician. Incumbents will perform medical procedures and tasks in collaboration and consultation with a physician, independently conduct appropriate examinations, and recommend proper diagnosis and treatment.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an accredited program for Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska.
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Nebraska.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass a medical exam.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass a drug test at a randomly announced time.
  • Must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program once at the Staff Training Academy.

Responsibilities

  • Performs health care services to patients/clients who are under the care of a state institution.
  • Performs medical procedures and tasks in collaboration and consultation with a physician.
  • Independently conduct appropriate examinations and recommend proper diagnosis and treatment.
  • Assesses the health status of patients/clients through comprehensive physical examination and diagnostic procedures to provide for the primary care of patients/clients.
  • Applies advanced nursing principles to effectively diagnose and treat patients/clients.
  • Prescribes medications and orders therapeutic treatments related to medical conditions within the scope of practice to provide appropriate patients/client care.
  • Formulates, implements, and monitors health management plans and refers patients/clients as medication conditions require for the management of health problems.
  • Provides education and counseling for patients/clients and families on health promotion, health maintenance, and health restoration for the management of health conditions.
  • Initiates appropriate interventions in emergency situations until a physician is available to administer treatment.
