About The Position

The Float Medical Assistant / Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for supporting providers and clinical teams across multiple clinic locations as assigned. This position assists with direct and indirect patient care, patient flow, clinical documentation, rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for exams and procedures, completing clerical tasks, and maintaining clean, stocked, and organized clinical areas. This position requires flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to adjust quickly to different clinic settings, provider preferences, patient needs, and daily workflows. The Float MA/LPN may be assigned to medical, walk-in, or specialty clinic areas based on organizational needs. When filled by a Licensed Practical Nurse, the position may also include LPN-specific duties such as medication administration, injections, certain infusions under appropriate direction, patient triage, and other nursing duties within the LPN scope of practice and organizational policy.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • CPR certification
  • Knowledge of medical office procedures, clinical workflows, medical terminology, HIPAA, infection control, safety standards, and documentation requirements.
  • Knowledge of equipment, supplies, and materials used in patient care and medical treatment.
  • Ability to provide compassionate, professional care to diverse patient populations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, providers, pharmacies, and team members.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage interruptions, and adjust to changing clinic needs.
  • Ability to float between locations and adapt to different workflows, providers, and clinic settings.
  • Ability to accurately document in the electronic health record.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal medical orders, provider instructions, clinical policies, and organizational procedures.
  • Ability to recognize urgent or emergent patient concerns and initiate the appropriate response.
  • Ability to operate standard medical office and clinical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Float between clinic locations and departments as assigned to support patient care and clinic operations.
  • Assist providers and clinical teams with patient care, exams, procedures, treatments, and patient flow.
  • Room patients, obtain vital signs, review health history, update medications and allergies, complete screenings, and prepare patients for exams or procedures.
  • Collect specimens, perform point-of-care testing, EKGs, blood draws, injections, medication administration, treatments, approved infusions, or other clinical tasks as allowed by training, competency, certification, licensure, provider orders, and policy.
  • Perform patient triage for phone calls, walk-in concerns, refill requests, portal messages, and other patient communication according to triage policy.
  • Assist with prescription refills, medication questions, and pharmacy communication according to policy.
  • Document patient care, screenings, assessments, interventions, treatments, medication administration, test results, patient responses, and patient communication accurately in the electronic health record.
  • Communicate provider instructions, patient education, follow-up information, and treatment plans to patients.
  • Answer and return patient phone calls, portal messages, refill requests, and other communication according to policy.
  • Complete clerical tasks as assigned, including forms, records requests, referrals, reports, scheduling, and patient information updates.
  • Clean and disinfect exam rooms, equipment, and work areas according to infection control guidelines.
  • Stock exam rooms, treatment areas, and clinical supplies.
  • Follow HIPAA, patient confidentiality, infection control, safety, nursing standards, clinical policies, and organizational policies.
  • Respond appropriately to urgent patient needs, emergency situations, and emergency codes.
  • Communicate patient concerns, workflow issues, safety concerns, supply needs, and team needs to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Complete orientation, competency checklists, required training, and skills validation.
  • May be cross-trained to support other positions, departments, or workflows based on organizational need, training, competency, certification, licensure, and scope of practice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
